Then the Priest gives the holy Gospel to the Deacon, who kisses the Priest’s hand as he receives it, and then circles the holy Table with the Priest following him. Preceded by altar servers holding candles and fans, they exit through the north door for the so-called Small Entrance. When there is no Deacon, the Priest takes the holy Gospel and holds it up in front of his face. When they reach the center of the church, they stop and bow their heads, and the Deacon says in a low voice:

Τῷ καιρῷ ἐκείνῳ, παραγίνεται ὁ Ἰησοῦς ἀπὸ τῆς Γαλιλαίας ἐπὶ τὸν Ἰορδάνην πρὸς τὸν Ἰωάννην τοῦ βαπτισθῆναι ὑπ᾿ αὐτοῦ. ὁ δὲ Ἰωάννης διεκώλυεν αὐτὸν λέγων· ἐγὼ χρείαν ἔχω ὑπὸ σοῦ βαπτισθῆναι, καὶ σὺ ἔρχῃ πρός με; ἀποκριθεὶς δὲ ὁ Ἰησοῦς εἶπε πρὸς αὐτόν· ἄφες ἄρτι· οὕτω γὰρ πρέπον ἐστὶν ἡμῖν πληρῶσαι πᾶσαν δικαιοσύνην· τότε ἀφίησιν αὐτόν· καὶ βαπτισθεὶς ὁ Ἰησοῦς ἀνέβη εὐθὺς ἀπὸ τοῦ ὕδατος· καὶ ἰδοὺ ἀνεῴχθησαν αὐτῷ οἱ οὐρανοί, καὶ εἶδε τὸ Πνεῦμα τοῦ Θεοῦ καταβαῖνον ὡσεὶ περιστερὰν καὶ ἐρχόμενον ἐπ᾿ αὐτόν· καὶ ἰδοὺ φωνὴ ἐκ τῶν οὐρανῶν λέγουσα· οὗτός ἐστιν ὁ υἱός μου ὁ ἀγαπητός, ἐν ᾧ εὐδόκησα.	At that time, Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to John, to be baptized by him. John would have prevented him, saying, “I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?” But Jesus answered him, “Let it be so now; for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness.” Then he consented. And when Jesus was baptized, he went up immediately from the water, and behold, the heavens were opened to him and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and alighting on him; and lo, a voice from heaven, saying, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.” [RSV]

Πάλιν καὶ πολλάκις σοὶ προσπίπτομεν καὶ σοῦ δεόμεθα, ἀγαθὲ καὶ φιλάνθρωπε, ὅπως ἐπιβλέψας ἐπὶ τὴν δέησιν ἡμῶν καθαρίσῃς ἡμῶν τὰς ψυχὰς καὶ τὰ σώματα ἀπὸ παντὸς μολυσμοῦ σαρκὸς καὶ πνεύματος καὶ δῴης ἡμῖν ἀνένοχον καὶ ἀκατάκριτον τὴν παράστασιν τοῦ ἁγίου σου θυσιαστηρίου. Χάρισαι δέ, ὁ Θεός, καὶ τοῖς συνευχομένοις ἡμῖν προκοπὴν βίου καὶ πίστεως καὶ συνέσεως πνευματικῆς· δὸς αὐτοῖς πάντοτε, μετὰ φόβου καὶ ἀγάπης λατρεύουσί σοι, ἀνενόχως καὶ ἀκατακρίτως μετέχειν τῶν ἁγίων σου μυστηρίων καὶ τῆς ἐπουρανίου σου βασιλείας ἀξιωθῆναι.	Again and many times we fall down before you and pray you, who are good and the lover of mankind, that heeding our prayer you will cleanse our souls and bodies from every defilement of flesh and spirit, and will grant us to stand without guilt or condemnation before your holy altar. Give also to those who pray with us the grace of progress in right living, in faith and spiritual understanding. Grant that always worshipping you with fear and love, they may partake of your holy mysteries without guilt or condemnation, and be counted worthy of your heavenly kingdom.

Ὅπως ὑπὸ τοῦ κράτους σου πάντοτε φυλαττόμενοι, σοὶ δόξαν ἀναπέμπωμεν, τῷ Πατρὶ καὶ τῷ Υἱῷ καὶ τῷ ἁγίῳ Πνεύματι, νῦν καὶ ἀεὶ καὶ εἰς τοὺς αἰῶνας τῶν αἰώνων.	That being always guarded by your might, we may give glory to you, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, now and for ever, and to the ages of ages.

Οὐδεὶς ἄξιος τῶν συνδεδεμένων ταῖς σαρκικαῖς ἐπιθυμίαις καὶ ἡδοναῖς προσέρχεσθαι ἢ προσεγγίζειν ἢ λειτουργεῖν σοι, βασιλεῦ τῆς δόξης· τὸ γὰρ διακονεῖν σοι μέγα καὶ φοβερὸν καὶ αὐταῖς ταῖς ἐπουρανίαις δυνάμεσιν. None of those who are entangled in carnal desires and pleasures is worthy to approach or draw near or minister to you, King of glory; for to serve you is great and awesome even for the heavenly powers. Yet on account of your inexpressible and boundless love for mankind you became man without change or alteration and were named our High Priest; and as Master of all you have committed to us the sacred ministry of this liturgy without shedding of blood. For you alone, Lord our God, are Ruler over all things in heaven and on earth, mounted on the throne of the Cherubim, Lord of the Seraphim and King of Israel, the only Holy One, resting in the holy place. Therefore I entreat you, who alone are good and ready to hear: Look upon me, your sinful and unprofitable servant, and purify my soul and heart from an evil conscience. By the power of your Holy Spirit enable me, clothed with the grace of the priesthood, to stand at this your Holy Table and celebrate the mystery of your holy and most pure Body and your precious Blood. For to you I come, bending my neck and praying: Do not turn away your face from me, nor reject me from among your children, but count me, your sinful and unworthy servant, worthy to offer these gifts to you. For you are the one who offers and is offered, who receives and is distributed, Christ our God, and to you we give glory, together with your Father, who is without beginning, and your all-holy, good and life-giving Spirit, now and for ever, and to the ages of ages. Amen.

Commemorating our all-holy, pure, most blessed and glorious Lady, Mother of God and Ever-Virgin Mary, with all the Saints, let us entrust ourselves and one another and our whole life to Christ our God.

Κύριε, ὁ Θεὸς ὁ παντοκράτωρ, ὁ μόνος Ἅγιος, ὁ δεχόμενος θυσίαν αἰνέσεως παρὰ τῶν ἐπικαλουμένων σε ἐν ὅλῃ καρδίᾳ, πρόσδεξαι καὶ ἡμῶν τῶν ἁμαρτωλῶν τὴν δέησιν καὶ προσάγαγε τῷ ἁγίῳ σου θυσιαστηρίῳ· καὶ ἱκάνωσον ἡμᾶς προσενεγκεῖν σοι δῶρά τε καὶ θυσίας πνευματικὰς ὑπὲρ τῶν ἡμετέρων ἁμαρτημάτων καὶ τῶν τοῦ λαοῦ ἀγνοημάτων. Lord, God, the Almighty, who alone are holy and who accept a sacrifice of praise from those who call on you with all their heart, accept also the supplication of us sinners, bring us to your holy altar, and enable us to offer you gifts and spiritual sacrifices for our sins and those committed in ignorance by the people. Count us worthy to find grace in your sight, that our sacrifice may be well pleasing to you and that the good Spirit of your grace may rest on us and on these gifts here set forth, and on all your people.

Ἐξεχόμεθα ἐν τῇ Κολυμβήθρᾳ, προπορευομένου τοῦ Διακόνου καὶ ἑπομένου τοῦ Ἱερέως, κρατοῦντος ἐν μὲν τῇ δεξιᾷ αὐτοῦ χειρὶ τὸν τίμιον Σταυρὸν μετὰ τοῦ ἁγιαστῆρος, ἐν δὲ τῇ ἀριστερᾷ τὸ ἅγιον Εὐαγγέλιον, καὶ ἵστανται πρὸ τῆς Κολυμβήθρας πρὸς ἀνατολὰς βλέποντες, τῶν Χορῶν ψαλλόντων τὰ κάτωθι Ἰδιόμελα Τροπάρια.	We process to the place where the vessel of water is prepared, the Deacon in front of the Priest, the latter holding a cross and aspergillum in his right hand and the Gospel book in his left. They stand before the vessel of water facing east, as the choirs sing the following hymns:

For water shall burst forth in the desert, and a valley in the thirsty land. The waterless desert shall become meadows, and the thirsty land springs of water. There will be the gladness of birds, a habitation of reeds and marshes. A pure way shall be there, and it shall be called a holy way. No unclean man shall pass through there, neither shall there be an unclean way there. But those dispersed shall walk in it, and they shall not go astray. No lion shall be there, nor shall any ravenous animals go up on it, nor at all be found there. At that time, Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. And when he came up out of the water, immediately he saw the heavens opened and the Spirit descending upon him like a dove; and a voice came from heaven, “You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased.” [RSV]

Ὑπὲρ τῆς ἄνωθεν εἰρήνης καὶ τῆς σωτηρίας τῶν ψυχῶν ἡμῶν τοῦ Κυρίου δεηθῶμεν.	For the peace from on high and for the salvation of our souls, let us pray to the Lord.
Ὑπὲρ τῆς εἰρήνης τοῦ σύμπαντος κόσμου, εὐσταθείας τῶν ἁγίων τοῦ Θεοῦ Ἐκκλησιῶν καὶ τῆς τῶν πάντων ἑνώσεως τοῦ Κυρίου δεηθῶμεν.	For the peace of the whole world, for the welfare of the holy Churches of God, and for the union of all, let us pray to the Lord.
Ὑπὲρ τοῦ ἁγίου οἴκου τούτου καὶ τῶν μετὰ πίστεως, εὐλαβείας καὶ φόβου Θεοῦ εἰσιόντων ἐν αὐτῷ, τοῦ Κυρίου δεηθῶμεν.	For this holy house, and for those who enter it with faith, reverence and the fear of God, let us pray to the Lord.
Ὑπὲρ τῶν εὐσεβῶν καὶ ὀρθοδόξων χριστιανῶν τοῦ Κυρίου δεηθῶμεν.	For pious and Orthodox Christians, let us pray to the Lord.
Ὑπὲρ τοῦ Ἀρχιεπισκόπου ἡμῶν (δεῖνος), τοῦ τιμίου πρεσβυτερίου, τῆς ἐν Χριστῷ διακονίας, παντὸς τοῦ κλήρου καὶ τοῦ λαοῦ τοῦ Κυρίου δεηθῶμεν.	For our Archbishop (name), for the honoured order of presbyters, for the diaconate in Christ, for all the clergy and the people, let us pray to the Lord.
Ὑπὲρ τοῦ εὐσεβοῦς ἡμῶν γένους, τοῦ Προέδρου, πάσης ἀρχῆς καὶ ἐξουσίας ἐν τῷ κράτει ἡμῶν, καὶ τοῦ κατὰ ξηράν, θάλασσαν, καὶ ἀέρα φιλοχρίστου ἡμῶν στρατοῦ, τοῦ Κυρίου δεηθῶμεν.	For our country, the president, and all those in public service, let us pray to the Lord.
Ὑπὲρ τῆς Ἁγίας τοῦ Χριστοῦ Μεγάλης Ἐκκλησίας, τῆς Ἱερᾶς ἡμῶν Ἀρχιεπισκοπῆς, [τῆς Ἱερᾶς Μητροπόλεως ταύτης,] τῆς πόλεως καὶ κοινότητος ταύτης, πάσης πόλεως, χώρας καὶ τῶν πίστει οἰκούντων ἐν αὐταῖς, τοῦ Κυρίου δεηθῶμεν.	For this city, for every city, town and village, and for the faithful who dwell in them, let us pray to the Lord.
Ὑπὲρ εὐκρασίας ἀέρων, εὐφορίας τῶν καρπῶν τῆς γῆς καὶ καιρῶν εἰρηνικῶν τοῦ Κυρίου δεηθῶμεν.	For favourable weather, an abundance of the fruits of the earth, and temperate seasons, let us pray to the Lord.
Ὑπὲρ πλεόντων, ὁδοιπορούντων, νοσούντων, καμνόντων, αἰχμαλώτων καὶ τῆς σωτηρίας αὐτῶν τοῦ Κυρίου δεηθῶμεν.	For those who travel by land, air or water, for the sick, the suffering, for those in captivity, and for their safety and salvation, let us pray to the Lord.
Ὑπὲρ τοῦ ἁγιασθῆναι τὸ ὕδωρ τοῦτο, τῇ δυνάμει καὶ ἐνεργείᾳ καὶ ἐπιφοιτήσει τοῦ ἁγίου Πνεύματος τοῦ Κυρίου δεηθῶμεν.	That this water might be hallowed by the might, and operation, and descent of the Holy Spirit, let us pray to the Lord.
Ὑπὲρ τοῦ καταφοιτῆσαι τοῖς ὕδασι τούτοις τὴν καθαρτικὴν τῆς ὑπερουσίου Τριάδος ἐνέργειαν τοῦ Κυρίου δεηθῶμεν.	That there may descend upon these waters the cleansing operation of the super substantial Trinity; let us pray to the Lord.
Ὑπὲρ τοῦ δωρηθῆναι αὐτοῖς τὴν χάριν τῆς ἀπολυτρώσεως, τὴν εὐλογίαν τοῦ Ἰορδάνου τοῦ Κυρίου δεηθῶμεν.	That there may be sent down upon it the Grace of Redemption, the blessing of the Jordan; let us pray to the Lord.
Ὑπὲρ τοῦ φωτισθῆναι ἡμᾶς φωτισμὸν γνώσεως καὶ εὐσεβείας διὰ τῆς ἐπιφοιτήσεως τοῦ ἁγίου Πνεύματος τοῦ Κυρίου δεηθῶμεν.	That we may be illumined with the Light of Knowledge and Piety through the descent of the Holy Spirit; let us pray to the Lord.
Ὑπὲρ τοῦ γενηθῆναι τὸ ὕδωρ τοῦτο ἁγιασμοῦ δῶρον, ἁμαρτημάτων λυτήριον, εἰς ἴασιν ψυχῆς τε καὶ σώματος καὶ πᾶσαν ὠφέλειαν ἐπιτήδειον τοῦ Κυρίου δεηθῶμεν.	That this water may become the gift of sanctification, redemption from sins, for the healing of soul and body, and
Ὑπὲρ τοῦ γενέσθαι αὐτὸ ὕδωρ ἁλλόμενον εἰς ζωὴν αἰώνιον τοῦ Κυρίου δεηθῶμεν.	That it may become water welling up to eternal life; let us pray to the Lord.
Ὑπὲρ τοῦ ἀναδειχθῆναι αὐτὸ ἀποτρόπαιον πάσης ἐπιβουλῆς ὁρατῶν καὶ ἀοράτων ἐχθρῶν τοῦ Κυρίου δεηθῶμεν.	That this water may prove effectual for the averting of every plot of visible and invisible enemies; let us pray to the Lord.
Ὑπὲρ τῶν ἀντλούντων καὶ ἀρυομένων εἰς ἁγιασμὸν οἴκων τοῦ Κυρίου δεηθῶμεν.	For those who are sprinkled with it and take it for the blessing of homes; let us pray to the Lord.
Ὑπὲρ τοῦ γενέσθαι αὐτὸ πρὸς καθαρισμὸν ψυχῶν καὶ σωμάτων πᾶσι τοῖς ἀρυομένοις πίστει καὶ μεταλαμβάνουσιν ἐξ αὐτοῦ τοῦ Κυρίου δεηθῶμεν.	That it may be for the purification of soul and body to all who with faith take and drink of it; let us pray to the Lord.
Ὑπὲρ τοῦ καταξιωθῆναι ἡμᾶς ἐμπλησθῆναι ἁγιασμοῦ διὰ τῆς τῶν ὑδάτων τούτων μεταλήψεως τῇ ἀοράτῳ ἐπιφανείᾳ τοῦ ἁγίου Πνεύματος τοῦ Κυρίου δεηθῶμεν.	That we may be granted to be filled with sanctification through drinking this water, by the invisible manifestation of the Holy Spirit; let us pray to the Lord.
Ὑπὲρ τοῦ εἰσακοῦσαι Κύριον τὸν Θεὸν φωνῆς τῆς δεήσεως ἡμῶν τῶν ἁμαρτωλῶν καὶ ἐλεῆσαι ἡμᾶς τοῦ Κυρίου δεηθῶμεν.	That the Lord God may listen to the voice of the prayer of us sinners and have mercy on us; let us pray to the Lord.
Ὑπὲρ τοῦ ῥυσθῆναι ἡμᾶς ἀπὸ πάσης θλίψεως, ὀργῆς, κινδύνου καὶ ἀνάγκης, τοῦ Κυρίου δεηθῶμεν.	For our deliverance from all affliction, wrath, danger and constraint, let us pray to the Lord.
Ἀντιλαβοῦ, σῶσον, ἐλέησον καὶ διαφύλαξον ἡμᾶς, ὁ Θεός, τῇ σῇ χάριτι.	Help us, save us, have mercy on us, and keep us, O God, by your grace.
Τῆς παναγίας, ἀχράντου, ὑπερευλογημένης, ἐνδόξου, δεσποίνης ἡμῶν Θεοτόκου καὶ ἀειπαρθένου Μαρίας μετὰ πάντων τῶν ἁγίων μνημονεύσαντες, ἑαυτοὺς καὶ ἀλλήλους καὶ πᾶσαν τὴν ζωὴν ἡμῶν Χριστῷ τῷ Θεῷ παραθώμεθα.	Commemorating our all-holy, pure, most blessed and glorious Lady, Mother of God and Ever-Virgin Mary, with all the Saints, let us entrust ourselves and one another and our whole life to Christ our God.

Ὁ Ἱερεὺς λέγει καθʼ ἑαυτὸν τὴν εὐχὴν ταύτην.	The Priest reads the following prayer in a low voice.
Μὴ διακονοῦντος Διακόνου, ο Ἱερεὺς ἀναγινώσκει κατʼ ἀνάγκην τὴν εὐχὴν ταύτην ἀναγινωσκομένων τῶν Προφητειῶν.	When there is no Deacon, by necessity the Priest reads this prayer while the Prophecies are being read.

Lord Jesus Christ, only-begotten Son, who are in the bosom of the Father, true God, source of life and immortality, Light from Light, who came into the world to enlighten it, flood our mind with light by your Holy Spirit and accept us as we bring you praise and thanksgiving for your wondrous mighty works from every age, and for your saving dispensation in these last times. By it you clothe yourself in our weak and beggared matter and coming down to the measure of our servitude, King of all, you accepted also to be baptised in the Jordan by the hand of a servant, so that, having sanctified the nature of the waters, you, the sinless one, might make a way for our rebirth through water and Spirit and re-establish us in our original freedom. As we celebrate the memory of this divine Mystery, we entreat you, Master, lover of mankind: Sprinkle on us, your unworthy servants, cleansing water, in accordance with your divine promise, the gift of your compassion, that the request of us sinners over this water may become acceptable by your goodness and that through it your blessing to be granted to us and to all your faithful people, to the glory of your holy, venerated Name.

Σοὶ γὰρ πρέπει πᾶσα δόξα, τιμή καὶ προσκύνησις, σὺν τῷ ἀνάρχῳ σου Πατρὶ καὶ τῷ παναγίῳ καὶ ἀγαθῷ καὶ ζωοποιῷ σοῦ Πνεύματι, νῦν καὶ ἀεὶ καὶ εἰς τοὺς αἰῶνας τῶν αἰώνων. Ἀμήν.	For to you belong all glory, honour and worship, with your Father who is without beginning, with you all-holy, good and life-giving Spirit, now and forever, and to the ages of ages. Amen.
Καὶ εἰπὼν καθʼ ἑαυτὸν τό, Ἀμήν, τοῦ Διακόνου ἤδη πεπληρωκότος τὴν μεγάλην Συναπτήν, ἄρχεται ὁ ἱερεὺς μεγαλοφώνως τοῦ προλόγου τῆς εὐχῆς τῶν ἁγίων Θεοφανείων.	And having said the Amen to himself, when the Deacon has finished the Litany, the Priest begins this Prayer in a loud voice:
Ἡ παροῦσα εὐχὴ οὐ λέγεται κατὰ τὴν παραμονὴν τῆς ἑορτῆς, ἀλλὰ μεταβαίνουσιν εὐθὺς εἰς τό· Μέγας εἶ, Κύριε…· λέγεται δὲ αὕτη κατὰ τὴν κυρίαν ἡμέραν τῆς ἑορτῆς τῶν Θεοφανείων.	This preamble is not said on the eve of the feast, so the prayer commences with, “You are great, O Lord!” below. This preamble is said on the day of the feast of Epiphany.

Trinity beyond all being, beyond all goodness, beyond all godhead, all-powerful, all-vigilant, invisible, incomprehensible; Creator of the spiritual beings and rational natures, innate goodness, unapproachable Light that enlightens everyone coming into the world, shine also in me your unworthy servant. Enlighten the eyes of my mind that I may dare to sing the praise of your measureless benevolence and power. May my supplication for the people here present be acceptable, so that my offences may not prevent the Holy Spirit from being present here; but permit me now without condemnation to cry out to you and say, Master, lover of mankind, beyond all goodness, Almighty, eternal King. We glorify you, the Creator and Fashioner of the universe. We glorify you, only-begotten Son of God, without father from your Mother, without mother from your Father. For in the preceding feast we saw you as a babe, but in the present one we see you full and perfect man, our God, made manifest as perfect God from perfect God.
Σήμερον γὰρ ὁ τῆς ἑορτῆς ἡμῖν ἐπέστη καιρός, καὶ χορὸς Ἁγίων ἐκκλησιάζει ἡμῖν καὶ Ἄγγελοι μετὰ ἀνθρώπων συνεορτάζουσι. Σήμερον ἡ χάρις τοῦ ἁγίου Πνεύματος ἐν εἴδει περιστερᾶς τοῖς ὕδασιν ἐπεφοίτησε. Σήμερον ὁ ἄδυτος Ἥλιος ἀνέτειλε καὶ ὁ κόσμος τῷ φωτὶ Κυρίου καταυγάζεται. Σήμερον ἡ σελήνη λαμπραῖς ταῖς ἀκτῖσι τῷ κόσμῳ συνεκλαμπρύνεται. Σήμερον οἱ φωτοειδεῖς ἀστέρες τῇ φαιδρότητι τῆς λάμψεως τὴν οἰκουμένην καλλωπίζουσι. Σήμερον αἱ νεφέλαι ὑετὸν δικαιοσύνης τῇ ἀνθρωπότητι οὐρανόθεν δροσίζουσι.	For today the moment of the feast is here for us and the choir of saints assembles here with us, and Angels keep festival with mortals. Today the grace of the Holy Spirit in the form of a dove dwelt upon the waters. Today the Sun that never sets has dawned and the world is made radiant with the light of the Lord. Today the Moon with its radiant beams sheds light on the world. Today the stars formed of light make the inhabited world lovely with the brightness of their splendour. Today the clouds rain down from heaven the shower of justice for mankind.
Σήμερον ὁ ἄκτιστος ὑπὸ τοῦ ἰδίου πλάσματος βουλῇ χειροθετεῖται. Σήμερον ὁ Προφήτης καὶ Πρόδρομος τῷ Δεσπότῃ προσέρχεται, ἀλλὰ τρόμῳ παρίσταται, ὁρῶν Θεοῦ πρὸς ἡμᾶς συγκατάβασιν. Σήμερον τὰ τοῦ Ἰορδάνου νάματα εἰς ἰάματα μεταποιεῖται τῇ τοῦ Κυρίου παρουσίᾳ. Σήμερον ῥείθροις μυστικοῖς πᾶσα ἡ κτίσις ἀρδεύεται. Σήμερον τὰ τῶν ἀνθρώπων πταίσματα τοῖς ὕδασι τοῦ Ἰορδάνου ἀπαλείφονται. Σήμερον ὁ παράδεισος ἠνέῳκται τοῖς ἀνθρώποις καὶ ὁ τῆς δικαιοσύνης Ἥλιος καταυγάζει ἡμῖν.	Today the Uncreated by his own will accepts the laying on of hands by his own creature. Today the Prophet and Forerunner draws near, but stands by with fear seeing God’s condescension towards us. Today the streams of Jordan are changed into healing by the presence of the Lord. Today all creation is watered by mystical streams. Today the failings of mankind are being washed away by the waters of Jordan. Today Paradise is opened for mortals and the Sun of justice shines down on us.
Σήμερον τὸ πικρὸν ὕδωρ, τὸ ἐπὶ Μωϋσέως, τῷ λαῷ εἰς γλυκύτητα μεταποιεῖται, τῇ τοῦ Κυρίου παρουσίᾳ. Σήμερον τοῦ παλαιοῦ θρήνου ἀπηλλάγημεν καὶ ὡς νέος Ἰσραὴλ διεσώθημεν. Σήμερον τοῦ σκότους ἐλυτρώθημεν καὶ τῷ φωτὶ τῆς θεογνωσίας καταυγαζόμεθα. Σήμερον ἡ ἀχλὺς τοῦ κόσμου καθαίρεται, τῇ ἐπιφανείᾳ τοῦ Θεοῦ ἡμῶν. Σήμερον λαμπαδοφεγγεῖ πᾶσα ἡ κτίσις ἄνωθεν. Σήμερον ἡ πλάνη κατήργηται καὶ ὁδὸν ἡμῖν σωτηρίας ἐργάζεται ἡ τοῦ Δεσπότου ἐπέλευσις.	Today the bitter water as once for Moses’ people is changed to sweetness by the presence of the Lord. Today we have been delivered from the ancient grief, and saved as the new Israel. Today we have been redeemed from darkness and are filled with radiance by the light of the knowledge of God. Today the gloomy fog of the world is cleansed by the manifestation of our God. Today all creation shines with light from on high. Today error has been destroyed and the coming of the Master makes for us a way of salvation.
Σήμερον τὰ ἄνω τοῖς κάτω συνεορτάζει καὶ τὰ κάτω τοῖς ἄνω συνομιλεῖ. Σήμερον ἡ ἱερὰ καὶ μεγαλόφωνος τῶν ὀρθοδόξων πανήγυρις ἀγάλλεται. Σήμερον ὁ Δεσπότης πρὸς τὸ βάπτισμα ἐπείγεται, ἵνα ἀναβιβάσῃ πρὸς ὕψος τὸ ἀνθρώπινον. Σήμερον ὁ ἀκλινὴς τῷ ἰδίῳ οἰκέτῃ ὑποκλίνεται, ἵνα ἡμᾶς ἐκ τῆς δουλείας ἐλευθερώσῃ. Σήμερον βασιλείαν οὐρανῶν ὠνησάμεθα· τῆς γὰρ βασιλείας τοῦ Κυρίου οὐκ ἔσται τέλος. Σήμερον γῆ καὶ θάλασσα τὴν τοῦ κόσμου χαρὰν ἐμερίσαντο καὶ ὁ κόσμος εὐφροσύνης πεπλήρωται.	Today things on high keep festival with those below, and those below commune with those on high. Today the sacred and triumphant festal assembly of the Orthodox exults. Today the Master hastens towards baptism, that he may lead humanity to the heights. Today the One who does not bow bows down to his own servant, that he may free us from servitude. Today we have purchased the Kingdom of heaven, for the Kingdom of the Lord will have no end. Today earth and sea share the joy of the world, and the world has been filled with gladness.
Εἴδοσάν σε ὕδατα, ὁ Θεός, εἴδοσάν σε ὕδατα καὶ ἐφοβήθησαν. Ὁ Ἰορδάνης ἐστράφη εἰς τὰ ὀπίσω, θεασάμενος τὸ πῦρ τῆς θεότητος, σωματικῶς κατερχόμενον καὶ εἰσερχόμενον ἐπʼ αὐτόν. The waters saw you, O God, the waters saw you and were afraid. The Jordan turned back when it saw the fire of the godhead descending in bodily form and entering it. The Jordan turned back as it contemplated the Holy Spirit in the form of a dove, descending and flying about you. The Jordan turned back as it saw the Invisible made visible, the Creator made flesh, the Master in the form of a servant. The Jordan turned back and the mountains leapt as they saw God in the flesh, and the clouds uttered their voice, marvelling at what had come to pass, seeing Light from Light, true God from true God, the Master’s festival today in Jordan; seeing him drowning the death from disobedience, the goad of error and the bond of Hell in Jordan and granting the Baptism of salvation to the world.

For by your own will you brought the universe from non-existence into being, you hold creation together by your might, and by your providence you direct the world. You composed creation from four elements; with four seasons you crowned the circle of the year. All the spiritual Powers tremble before you. The sun sings your praise, the moon glorifies you, the stars entreat you, the light obeys you, the deeps tremble before you, the springs are your servants. You stretched out the heavens on the waters; you walled in the sea with sand; you poured out the air for breathing.

Angelic Powers minister to you. The choirs of the Archangels worship you. The many-eyed Cherubim and the six-winged Seraphim as they stand and fly around you hide their faces in fear of your unapproachable glory.
Σὺ γάρ, Θεὸς ὤν ἀπερίγραπτος ἄναρχός τε καὶ ἀνέκφραστος, ἦλθες ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς μορφὴν δούλου λαβών, ἐν ὁμοιώματι ἀνθρώπων γενόμενος· οὐ γὰρ ἔφερες, Δέσποτα, διὰ σπλάγχνα ἐλέους σου, θεάσασθαι ὑπὸ τοῦ διαβόλου τυραννούμενον τὸ γένος τῶν ἀνθρώπων, ἀλλʼ ἦλθες καὶ ἔσωσας ἡμᾶς. For you, being God uncircumscribed, without beginning and inexpressible, came upon earth, taking the form of a servant, being found in the likeness of mortals. For you could not bear, Master, in the compassion of your mercy to watch the human race being tyrannised by the devil, but you came and saved us. We acknowledge your grace, we proclaim your mercy, we do not conceal your benevolence. You freed the generations of our race. You sanctified a virgin womb by your birth. All creation sang your praise when you appeared. For you are our God who appeared on earth and lived among mortals. You sanctified the streams of Jordan by sending down from heaven your All-holy Spirit and you smashed the heads of the dragons that lurked there.

Ποίησον αὐτὸ ἀφθαρσίας πηγήν, ἁγιασμοῦ δῶρον, ἁμαρτημάτων λυτήριον, νοσημάτων ἀλεξητήριον, δαίμοσιν ὀλέθριον, ταῖς ἐναντίαις δυνάμεσιν ἀπρόσιτον, ἀγγελικῆς ἰσχύος πεπληρωμένον. Ἵνα πάντες οἱ ἀρυόμενοι καὶ μεταλαμβάνοντες ἔχοιεν αὐτὸ πρὸς καθαρισμὸν ψυχῶν καὶ σωμάτων, πρὸς ἰατρείαν παθῶν, πρὸς ἁγιασμὸν οἴκων, πρὸς πᾶσαν ὠφέλειαν ἐπιτήδειον.	And give to it the grace of redemption and the blessing of Jordan. Make it a source of incorruption, a gift of sanctification, a deliverance from sins, an averting of diseases, unapproachable by hostile powers, filled with angelic strength. That all who draw from it and partake of it may have it for cleansing of souls and bodies, for healing of passions, for sanctification of homes, for every suitable purpose.

You are our God, who in the days of Noë drowned sin through the water of the flood. You are our God, who through Moses freed the Hebrew race from the slavery of Pharao through the sea. You are our God who split open the rock in the desert, and waters rushed out and torrents flooded down, and you satisfied your thirsty people. You are our God, who through Elias turned Israel from the error of Baal.

Give to all who partake of it sanctification, blessing, cleansing, health. And save, Lord, our faithful Rulers. And guard them under your protection in peace. Subdue beneath their feet every foe and enemy. Grant them all their requests that are for salvation and eternal life. Remember, Lord, our Archbishop (name), the whole order of Presbyters, the Diaconate in Christ, every rank of the clergy, the people here present and our brethren who with good reason are absent, and have mercy on us in accordance with your great mercy.

Incline your ear and hear us, Lord, who accepted to be baptised in Jordan and to sanctify the waters, and bless us all, who signify our calling as servants by the bending of our necks. And count us worthy to be filled with your sanctification through the partaking and sprinkling of this water. And let it be for us, Lord, for healing of soul and body.

May He who condescended to be baptized by John in the Jordan, for our salvation, Christ our true God, through the intercessions of His all-pure and all-immaculate holy Mother, the power of the precious and life-giving Cross, the protection of the honorable, bodiless powers of heaven, the supplications of the honorable, glorious prophet and forerunner John the Baptist, of the holy, glorious, and praiseworthy apostles, of the holy, glorious, and triumphant martyrs, of our righteous and God-bearing fathers, (local patron saint); of the holy and righteous ancestors of God Joachim and Anna, and of all the saints, have mercy on us and save us, as He is good, benevolent, and merciful God.
