The shepherd's pipe of your theology overpowered the trumpets of the orators; for as you delved into the depths of the Spirit, so you were endowed with the power of eloquence. Father Gregory, intercede with Christ God, to save our souls. [SD]

When Gabriel addressed you, O Virgin, with his 'Hail', as he spoke the Master of all things became incarnate in you the holy Ark, as righteous David sang. When you had truly risen from the tomb you ordered the holy women to proclaim the Resurrection to the Apostles, as it is written; and Peter, coming at full speed, stood by the grave and seeing the light in the tomb was struck with amazement. And so he both saw the grave clothes lying there alone, without the divine body, and he believed and cried out: Glory to you Christ God, because you save us all, our Saviour, for you are the brightness of the Father. When the hosts of the Angels saw how You were accounted among the dead, they all marveled. You, O Savior, are the One who destroyed the might of death; and when You arose You raised Adam with yourself and from Hades liberated everyone. [SD]

“Why do you mingle the ointments with your tears full of pity, O women disciples?” Thus the Angel who was shining in the tomb cried to the myrrh-bearing women. “See for yourselves the empty tomb and understand, that the Savior has risen from the sepulcher.”

Very early in the morning, the myrrh-bearing women were hastening to Your tomb lamenting. But the Angel appeared to them and uttered, “The time for lamentation has ended; weep no more. Go announce the Resurrection to the Apostles.”

When you had ransacked the palaces of Hell and raised the dead, O Longsuffering, you met the Women bearing myrrh, bringing them joy instead of sorrow; and to your Apostles you revealed the symbols of your victory, my Saviour, giver of life, and you enlightened creation, lover of humankind. Therefore too the world rejoices at your Rising from the dead, O Most Merciful. [Lash]

With your theologic tongue having unraveled the weavings of the rhetors, you adorned the Church of Christ with the garment woven from above with Orthodox dogmas. Wearing it, the Church with us, your descendants, cries out, O rejoice! glorious Father, you are the utmost theological mind. [SD]

Fill my mind, poor and sorry, with your theological and lofty wisdom, so that I may extol your life, O Father; for I will not be able to offer you a word, unless you grant me eloquence and knowledge, ability and understanding, so that I may offer you “thine own of thine own”; and from the wealth of your virtues I may have the wherewithal to crown your divine and holy head, and with the faithful cry out, O rejoice! glorious Father, you are the utmost theological mind. The sun once shone on dry land, mother of the deep. For the water was fixed fast like a wall on either side for the people as they marched on foot and sang a song pleasing to God, 'Let us sing to the Lord, for he has been greatly glorified.' [Lash]

Your virtue, O Christ, covered the heavens, for coming forth from the Ark of your Sanctification, your undefiled Mother, you appeared in the temple of your glory as an infant carried in her arms, and the universe was filled with your praise. [Lash]

John. 21:14 – 25

At that time, Jesus revealed himself to the disciples after he was raised from the dead. And he said to Simon Peter, “Simon, son of John, do you love me more than these?” He said to him, “Yes, Lord; you know that I love you.” He said to him, “Feed my lambs.” A second time he said to him, “Simon, son of John, do you love me?” He said to him, “Yes, Lord; you know that I love you.” He said to him, “Tend my sheep.” He said to him the third time, “Simon, son of John, do you love me?” Peter was grieved because he said to him the third time, “Do you love me?” And he said to him, “Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you.” Jesus said to him, “Feed my sheep. Truly, truly, I say to you, when you were young, you girded yourself and walked where you would; but when you are old, you will stretch out your hands, and another will gird you and carry you where you do not wish to go.” (This he said to show by what death he was to glorify God.) And after this he said to him, “Follow me.” Peter turned and saw following them the disciple whom Jesus loved, who had lain close to his breast at the supper and had said, “Lord, who is it that is going to betray you?” When Peter saw him, he said to Jesus, “Lord, what about this man?” Jesus said to him, “If it is my will that he remain until I come, what is that to you? Follow me!” The saying spread abroad among the brethren that this disciple was not to die; yet Jesus did not say to him that he was not to die, but, “If it is my will that he remain until I come, what is that to you?” This is the disciple who is bearing witness to these things, and who has written these things; and we know that his testimony is true. But there are also many other things which Jesus did; were every one of them to be written, I suppose that the world itself could not contain the books that would be written. Amen. [RSV]

Psalm 50 (51).

Mode 2. (or the Mode of the week)

Have mercy on me, O God, according to Your great mercy; and according to the abundance of Your compassion, blot out my transgression.

Wash me thoroughly from my lawlessness and cleanse me from my sin.

For I know my lawlessness, and my sin is always before me.

Against You only have I sinned and done evil in Your sight; that You may be justified in Your words, and overcome when You are judged.

For behold, I was conceived in transgressions, and in sins my mother bore me.

Behold, You love truth; You showed me the unknown and secret things of Your wisdom.

You shall sprinkle me with hyssop, and I will be cleansed; You shall wash me, and I will be made whiter than snow.

You shall make me hear joy and gladness; my bones that were humbled shall greatly rejoice.

Turn Your face from my sins, and blot out all my transgressions.

Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me.

Do not cast me away from Your presence, and do not take Your Holy Spirit from me.

Restore to me the joy of Your salvation, and uphold me with Your guiding Spirit.

I will teach transgressors Your ways, and the ungodly shall turn back to You.

Deliver me from bloodguiltiness, O God, the God of my salvation, and my tongue shall greatly rejoice in Your righteousness.

O Lord, You shall open my lips, and my mouth will declare Your praise.

For if You desired sacrifice, I would give it; You will not be pleased with whole burnt offerings.

A sacrifice to God is a broken spirit, a broken and humbled heart God will not despise.

Do good, O Lord, in Your good pleasure to Zion, and let the walls of Jerusalem be built.

Then You will be pleased with a sacrifice of righteousness, with offerings and whole burnt offerings.

Then shall they offer young bulls on Your altar. And have mercy on me, O God. [SAAS]

Mystic are you of divine illumination, * and the second theologian, and the Trinity’s * bright secretary, O Gregory, as one who teaches * on the divine Nature and ineffable. * So as you more clearly now enjoy being with God, * remember us all who honor you, and be our champion * in the defense of the Church you organized. * For as the Scripture says, your voice and words * have gone forth to the ends of the universe, * teaching all to give glory * to the consubstantial Trinity. [SD]

Verse: My mouth shall speak wisdom, and the meditation of my heart, understanding. [SAAS]

Divinely eloquent Father, when you planted * with your tongue the godly seed in furrows of the heart, * then to the complement of the Church you brought the harvest * of the sublime and richest theology. * With the Spirit’s fire, from the Church you burned away * the thorny weeds of the heresies; and you were bred on * the highest love for divine philosophy, * Father of Fathers and the Pastor of * Pastors, bright star of priests, and the pride and joy * of the world, and the glory * of the faithful, blessed Gregory. [SD]

Verse: The mouth of the righteous shall meditate on wisdom, and his tongue shall speak of judgment. [SAAS]

To the proverbial mixing bowl of wisdom * you put your most precious mouth, O Father Gregory. * Having imbibed its most sacred drink, to the believers * you have imparted sublime theology. * And you stemmed the soul-corrupting course of heresies, * for it was brimming with blasphemies. The Holy Spirit * indeed found you as the pilot of the ship, * scaring away and driving back assaults * of the impious as if but gusts of wind; * for in Monad of essence * you proclaimed the Holy Trinity. [SD]

With theological hymns, let us extol the harp of the Spirit, the destroyer of heresies, the delight of the Orthodox, the second bosom-theologian, who became an eyewitness of the Logos by his dogmas, the wise Arch-pastor of the Church’s flock; and to him let us say, “You are the good Shepherd, O Gregory, who gave yourself for us, as did Christ the Teacher; and you stand in chorus now with Paul, and you intercede on behalf of our souls.” [SD]

Καὶ νῦν.

Both now. Theotokion.

You are supremely blessed, O Virgin Theotokos. For through Him who from you became incarnate was Hades taken prisoner, and Adam has been summoned back; the curse has been neutralized, and Eve has been liberated; death has been put to death, and we have been brought to life. Therefore extolling we cry out: O Christ our God, You are blessed, for so was Your good pleasure. Glory to You! [SD]

Lord, You have been our refuge from generation to generation. I said: Lord, have mercy on me. Heal my soul, for I have sinned against You.

Lord, I have fled to You. Teach me to do Your will, for You are my God.

Today salvation has come to the world. * Let us sing to him who rose from the tomb, the Author of our life. * For destroying death by death, * he has given us the victory * and his great mercy. [Lash]
