Θεὸς Κύριος καὶ ἐπέφανεν ἡμῖν. Εὐλογημένος ὁ ἐρχόμενος ἐν ὀνόματι Κυρίου.

God is the Lord, and He revealed Himself to us. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. [SAAS]

Στίχ. αʹ. Ἐξομολογεῖσθε τῷ Κυρίῳ καὶ ἐπικαλεῖσθε τὸ ὄνομα τὸ ἅγιον αὐτοῦ.

Verse 1: Give thanks to the Lord and call upon His holy name.

Στίχ. βʹ. Πάντα τὰ ἔθνη ἐκύκλωσάν με, καὶ τῷ ὀνόματι Κυρίου ἠμυνάμην αὐτούς.

Verse 2: All the nations surrounded me, but in the name of the Lord I defended myself against them.

Στίχ. γʹ. Παρὰ Κυρίου ἐγένετο αὕτη καὶ ἔστι θαυμαστὴ ἐν ὀφθαλμοῖς ἡμῶν.

Verse 3: And this came about from the Lord, and it is wonderful in our eyes.

Resurrectional Apolytikion.

Τὸ φαιδρὸν τῆς ἀναστάσεως κήρυγμα, ἐκ τοῦ Ἀγγέλου μαθοῦσαι αἱ τοῦ Κυρίου Μαθήτριαι, καὶ τὴν προγονικὴν ἀπόφασιν ἀποῤῥίψασαι, τοῖς Ἀποστόλοις καυχώμεναι ἔλεγον· Ἐσκύλευται ὁ θάνατος, ἠγέρθη Χριστὸς ὁ Θεός, δωρούμενος τῷ κόσμῳ τὸ μέγα ἔλεος.

When the women Disciples of the Lord had learnt from the Angel the joyful message of the Resurrection, casting away the ancestral condemnation, triumphantly they said to the Apostles: Death has been despoiled, Christ God has been raised, granting the world his great mercy. [Lash]

Τὸ ἀπʼ αἰῶνος ἀπόκρυφον, καὶ Ἀγγέλοις ἄγνωστον μυστήριον, διὰ σού Θεοτόκε τοῖς ἐπὶ γῆς πεφανέρωται, Θεὸς ἐν ἀσυγχύτῳ ἑνώσει σαρκούμενος, καὶ Σταυρὸν ἑκουσίως ὑπὲρ ἡμῶν καταδεξάμενος· διʼ οὗ ἀναστήσας τὸν πρωτόπλαστον, ἔσωσεν ἐκ θανάτου τὰς ψυχὰς ἡμῶν.

The mystery hidden from all eternity and unknown to Angels has been revealed to those on earth through you, O Mother of God: God being made flesh in a union without confusion, and willingly accepting the Cross for us, through which he raised the first-formed man and saved our souls from death. [Lash]

Help us, save us, have mercy on us, and keep us, O God, by your grace.

Τῆς παναγίας, ἀχράντου, ὑπερευλογημένης, ἐνδόξου, δεσποίνης ἡμῶν Θεοτόκου καὶ ἀειπαρθένου Μαρίας μετὰ πάντων τῶν ἁγίων μνημονεύσαντες, ἑαυτοὺς καὶ ἀλλήλους καὶ πᾶσαν τὴν ζωὴν ἡμῶν Χριστῷ τῷ Θεῷ παραθώμεθα.

Commemorating our all-holy, pure, most blessed and glorious Lady, Mother of God and Ever-Virgin Mary, with all the Saints, let us entrust ourselves and one another and our whole life to Christ our God.

For yours is the dominion, and yours is the kingdom, the power, and the glory of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, now and forever and to the ages of ages.

Ἀναβλέψασαι τοῦ τάφου τὴν εἴσοδον, καὶ τὴν φλόγα τοῦ Ἀγγέλου μὴ φέρουσαι, αἱ Μυροφόροι σὺν τρόμῳ ἐξίσταντο λέγουσαι· Ἆρα ἐκλάπη, ὁ τῷ λῃστῇ ἀνοίξας Παράδεισον; ἆρα ἡγέρθη, ὁ καὶ πρὸ πάθους κηρύξας τὴν ἔγερσιν; Ἀληθῶς ἀνέστη Χριστὸς ὁ Θεός, τοῖς ἐν ᾅδῃ παρέχων ζωὴν καὶ ἀνάστασιν.

As they looked at the entrance of the tomb and were unable to endure the bright flame of the Angel, the Myrrhbearing women trembled with amazement and said, 'Can the One who opened Paradise to the Thief have been stolen? Can he who before his passion proclaimed his Rising have been raised? Truly Christ God has risen, granting those in Hell life and resurrection'. [Lash]

Ἑκουσίᾳ σου βουλῇ, Σταυρὸν ὑπέμεινας Σωτήρ, καὶ ἐν μνήματι καινῷ, ἄνθρωποι ἔθεντο θνητοί, τὸν διὰ λόγου τὰ πέρατα συστησάμενον· ὅθεν δεσμευθεὶς ὁ ἀλλότριος, θάνατος δεινῶς ἐσκυλεύετο, καὶ οἱ ἐν ᾅδῃ ἅπαντες ἐκραύγαζον, τῇ ζωηφόρῳ ἐγέρσει σου· Χριστὸς ἀνέστη, ὁ ζωοδότης, μένων εἰς τοὺς αἰῶνας.

Of your own will, O Saviour, you endured the Cross, and mortals laid in a new tomb the One who established the ends of earth through a word; therefore the alien was bound, death terribly despoiled and all those in Hell cried aloud at your life-bearing Rising: Christ, the giver of life, has risen and abides to the ages. [Lash]

Κατεπλάγη Ἰωσήφ, τὸ ὑπὲρ φύσιν θεωρῶν, καὶ ἐλάμβανεν εἰς νοῦν, τὸν ἐπὶ πόκον ὑετόν, ἐν τῇ ἀσπόρῳ συλλήψει σου Θεοτόκε, βάτον ἐν πυρὶ ἀκατάφλεκτον, ῥάβδον Ἀαρὼν τὴν βλαστήσασαν· καὶ μαρτυρῶν ὁ μνήστωρ σου καὶ φύλαξ, τοῖς ἱερεῦσιν ἐκραύγαζε· Παρθένος τίκτει, καὶ μετὰ τόκον, πάλιν μένει παρθένος.

Joseph marveled as he saw that which transcended nature's bounds; * whereupon he brought to mind the dew that fell upon the fleece, * at your conceiving without seed, O Theotokos, * the bush that had remained unconsumed in fire, * Aaron's rod of old that had blossomed forth. * As your betrothed and guardian he witnessed * before the priests and he cried aloud: * The Virgin gives birth, and after childbirth * still she remains a Virgin. Mode 4. Come quickly.

Ταχὺ προκατάλαβε.

Ἀνέστης ὡς ἀθάνατος, ἀπὸ τοῦ ᾅδου Σωτήρ· συνήγειρας τὸν κόσμον σου, τῇ ἀναστάσει τῇ σῇ, Χριστὲ ὁ Θεὸς ἡμῶν· ἔθραυσας ἐν ἰσχύϊ, τοῦ θανάτου τὸ κράτος· ἔδειξας Ἐλεῆμον, τὴν ἀνάστασιν πᾶσι· διό σε καὶ δοξάζομεν, μόνε Φιλάνθρωπε.

You rose from Hell as immortal, O Saviour, and raised your world with you by your Resurrection, Christ our God; with strength you broke the might of death, and revealed the Resurrection to all, O Merciful: therefore we also glorify you, only lover of mankind. [Lash]

Ἐκ τῶν ἄνω κατελθών, τῶν ὑψωμάτων Γαβριήλ, καὶ τῇ πέτρα προσελθών, ἔνθα ἡ πέτρα τῆς ζωῆς, λευχειμονῶν ἀνεκραύγαζε ταῖς κλαιούσαις· Παύσασθε ὑμεῖς, τῆς θρηνώδους κραυγῆς, ἔχουσαι ἀεί, τὸ εὐσυμπάθητον· ὃν γὰρ ζητεῖτε κλαίουσαι, θαρσεῖτε, ὡς ἀληθῶς ἐξεγήγερται· διὸ βοᾶτε, τοῖς Ἀποστόλοις, ὅτι ἀνέστη ὁ Κύριος.

Coming down from the heights above, Gabriel approached the rock where the Rock of life was lying, and clothed in white he cried aloud to the weeping women: Cease your cry of lamentation; now you have compassion for ever. Take courage, for the One you seek weeping has truly risen. Therefore cry out to the Apostles that the Lord has risen. [Lash]

Κατεπλάγησαν Ἁγνή, πάντες Ἀγγέλων οἱ χοροί, τὸ Μυστήριον τῆς σῆς, κυοφορίας τὸ φρικτόν, πῶς ὁ τὰ πάντα συνέχων νεύματι μόνῳ, ἀγκάλαις ὡς βροτός, ταῖς σαῖς συνέχεται, καὶ δέχεται ἀρχὴν ὁ Προαιώνιος, καὶ γαλουχεῖται σύμπασαν ὁ τρέφων, πνοὴν ἀφάτῳ χρηστότητι, καὶ σὲ ὡς ὄντως, Θεοῦ Μητέρα, εὐφημοῦντες δοξάζουσι.

All the choirs of Angels were struck with wonder, Pure Virgin, at the dread mystery of your conceiving; how the One who holds all things fast with only a nod, is held fast in your arms as a mortal; how the Eternal accepts a beginning; how the One who nourishes everything that breathes by his ineffable goodness, is suckled at the breast: and with hymns they glorify you as truly Mother of God. [Lash]

Εὐλογητὸς εἶ, Κύριε, δίδαξόν με τὰ δικαιώματά σου.

Blessed are You, O Lord, teach me Your statutes.

Τῶν Ἀγγέλων ὁ δῆμος, κατεπλάγη ὁρῶν σε, ἐν νεκροῖς λογισθέντα, τοῦ θανάτου δὲ Σωτήρ, τὴν ἰσχὺν καθελόντα, καὶ σὺν ἑαυτῷ τὸν Ἀδὰμ ἐγείραντα, καὶ ἐξ ᾍδου πάντας ἐλευθερώσαντα.

When the hosts of the Angels saw how You were accounted among the dead, they all marveled. You, O Savior, are the One who destroyed the might of death; and when You arose You raised Adam with yourself and from Hades liberated everyone. [SD]

Blessed are You, O Lord, teach me Your statutes.

Τί τὰ μύρα, συμπαθῶς τοῖς δάκρυσιν, ὦ Μαθήτριαι κιρνᾶτε; ὁ ἀστράπτων ἐν τῷ τάφῳ Ἄγγελος, προσεφθέγγετο ταῖς Μυροφόροις· Ἴδετε ὑμεῖς τὸν τάφον καὶ ᾔσθητε· ὁ Σωτὴρ γὰρ ἐξανέστη τοῦ μνήματος.

“Why do you mingle the ointments with your tears full of pity, O women disciples?” Thus the Angel who was shining in the tomb cried to the myrrh-bearing women. “See for yourselves the empty tomb and understand, that the Savior has risen from the sepulcher.”

Blessed are You, O Lord, teach me Your statutes.

Λίαν πρωΐ, Μυροφόροι ἔδραμον, πρὸς τὸ μνῆμά σου θρηνολογοῦσαι· ἀλλʼ ἐπέστη, πρὸς αὐτὰς ὁ Ἄγγελος, καὶ εἶπε· θρήνου ὁ καιρὸς πέπαυται, μὴ κλαίετε, τὴν Ἀνάστασιν δέ, Ἀποστόλοις εἴπατε.

Very early in the morning, the myrrh-bearing women were hastening to Your tomb lamenting. But the Angel appeared to them and uttered, “The time for lamentation has ended; weep no more. Go announce the Resurrection to the Apostles.”

Εὐλογητὸς εἶ, Κύριε, δίδαξόν με τὰ δικαιώματά σου.

Blessed are You, O Lord, teach me Your statutes.

Μυροφόροι γυναῖκες, μετὰ μύρων ἐλθοῦσαι, πρὸς τὸ μνῆμά σου, Σῶτερ ἐνηχοῦντο. Ἀγγέλου τρανῶς, πρὸς αὐτὰς φθεγγομένου· Τί μετὰ νεκρῶν, τὸν ζώντα λογίζεσθε; ὡς Θεὸς γάρ, ἐξανέστη τοῦ μνήματος.

When the myrrh-bearing women had come with their spices to Your sepulcher, O Savior, they heard the voice of an Angel clearly speaking to them, “Why do you account among the dead the One who lives? For as God, He has risen from the sepulcher.”

Προσκυνοῦμεν Πατέρα, καὶ τὸν τούτου Υἱόν τε, καὶ τὸ Ἅγιον Πνεῦμα, τὴν Ἁγίαν Τριάδα, ἐν μιᾷ τῇ οὐσίᾳ, σὺν τοῖς Σεραφείμ, κράζοντες τό· Ἅγιος, Ἅγιος, Ἅγιος εἶ, Κύριε.

We bow down in worship to the Father and His Son and the Holy Spirit, the Holy Trinity, one in essence; and we cry aloud with the Seraphim: Holy, Holy, Holy are You, O Lord.

Ζωοδότην τεκοῦσα, ἐλυτρώσω Παρθένε, τὸν Ἀδὰμ ἁμαρτίας, χαρμονὴν δὲ τῇ Εὔᾳ, ἀντὶ λύπης παρέσχες, ῥεύσαντα ζωῆς, ἴθυνε πρὸς ταύτην δέ, ὁ ἐκ σοῦ σαρκωθείς Θεὸς καὶ ἄνθρωπος.

Giving birth to the Giver of life, O Virgin, you delivered Adam from sin, and to Eve you have rendered joy in place of sorrow. He who from you became incarnate, God and man, has directed to life him who fell from it.

The Myrrhbearers proclaimed to the Apostles the news of your wondrous Rising, O Christ: that as God you had risen, granting the world your great mercy. [Lash]

Ἐκ νεότητός μου πολλὰ πολεμεῖ με πάθη· ἀλλʼ αὐτὸς ἀντιλαβοῦ, καὶ σῶσον Σωτήρ μου.

From my youth up many passions make war on me; but you, O Saviour, help me and save me. [Lash]

Οἱ μισοῦντες Σιών, αἰσχύνθητε ἀπὸ τοῦ Κυρίου· ὡς χόρτος γάρ, πυρὶ ἔσεσθε ἀπεξηραμμένοι.

You who hate Sion, may you be put to shame by the Lord; for you will be dried up as grass by fire. [Lash]

Ἁγίῳ Πνεύματι πᾶσα ψυχὴ ζωοῦται, καὶ καθάρσει ὑψοῦται, λαμπρύνεται, τῇ τριαδικῇ μονάδι ἱεροκρυφίως.

By the Holy Spirit every soul is given life, and by cleansing it is exalted; it is made bright by the threefold Unity in a sacred mystery. [Lash]

Ἐκέκραξά σοι Κύριε, θερμῶς ἐκ βάθους ψυχῆς μου· Κᾀμοὶ γενέσθω, πρὸς ὑπακοὴν τὰ θεῖά σου ὦτα.

From the depth of my soul I have cried to you fervently, O Lord; let your divine ears hearken even to me. [Lash]

Ἐπὶ τὸν Κύριον ἐλπίδα πᾶς τις κεκτημένος, ὑψηλότερός ἐστι, πάντων τῶν λυπούντων.

Every one who has set their hope on the Lord, is higher than all those who mourn. [Lash]

Δόξα· καὶ νῦν.

Ἁγίῳ Πνεύματι, ἀναβλύζει τὰ τῆς χάριτος ῥεῖθρα, ἀρδεύοντα, ἅπασαν τὴν κτίσιν πρὸς ζωογονίαν.

By the Holy Spirit the streams of grace well up; watering all creation to engender life. [Lash]

Ἡ καρδία μου πρὸς σὲ Λόγε ὑψωθήτω, καὶ οὐδὲν θέλξει με, τῶν τοῦ κόσμου τερπνῶν πρὸς χαμαιζηλίαν.

Let my heart be raised to you, O Lord; and let none of the pleasures of the world lure me earthwards. [Lash]

Ἐπὶ τὴν μητέρα αὐτοῦ, ὡς ἔχει τις στοργήν, ἐπὶ τῷ Κυρίῳ, θερμότερον φίλτρον χρεωστοῦμεν.

As one has tender love for one’s mother; so we should have even more fervent love for the Lord. [Lash]

Once the Angel caused the fiery furnace to emit * dew to refresh the three holy youths. * The Chaldeans were by command of God completely burnt. * And therefore the tyrant was convinced * to cry aloud, "O God of our fathers, blessed are You." [SD]

Αἰνοῦμεν, εὐλογοῦμεν καὶ προσκυνοῦμεν τὸν Κύριον.

We praise and we bless and we worship the Lord.

Ἐλέησόν με, ὁ Θεός, κατὰ τὸ μέγα ἔλεός σου καὶ κατὰ τὸ πλῆθος τῶν οἰκτιρμῶν σου ἐξάλειψον τὸ ἀνόμημά μου.

Have mercy on me, O God, according to Your great mercy; and according to the abundance of Your compassion, blot out my transgression.

Ἐπὶ πλεῖον πλῦνόν με ἀπὸ τῆς ἀνομίας μου καὶ ἀπὸ τῆς ἁμαρτίας μου καθάρισόν με.

Wash me thoroughly from my lawlessness and cleanse me from my sin.

Ὅτι τὴν ἀνομίαν μου ἐγὼ γινώσκω, καὶ ἡ ἁμαρτία μου ἐνώπιόν μού ἐστι διαπαντός.

For I know my lawlessness, and my sin is always before me.

Σοὶ μόνῳ ἥμαρτον, καὶ τὸ πονηρὸν ἐνώπιόν σου ἐποίησα· ὅπως ἂν δικαιωθῇς ἐν τοῖς λόγοις σου, καὶ νικήσῃς ἐν τῷ κρίνεσθαί σε.

Against You only have I sinned and done evil in Your sight; that You may be justified in Your words, and overcome when You are judged.

Ἰδοὺ γὰρ ἐν ἀνομίαις συνελήφθην, καὶ ἐν ἁμαρτίαις ἐκίσσησέ με ἡ μήτηρ μου.

For behold, I was conceived in transgressions, and in sins my mother bore me.

Ἰδοὺ γὰρ ἀλήθειαν ἠγάπησας· τὰ ἄδηλα καὶ τὰ κρύφια τῆς σοφίας σου ἐδήλωσάς μοι.

Behold, You love truth; You showed me the unknown and secret things of Your wisdom.

Ῥαντιεῖς με ὑσσώπῳ, καὶ καθαρισθήσομαι· πλυνεῖς με καὶ ὑπὲρ χιόνα λευκανθήσομαι.

You shall sprinkle me with hyssop, and I will be cleansed; You shall wash me, and I will be made whiter than snow.

Ἀκουτιεῖς μοι ἀγαλλίασιν καὶ εὐφροσύνην· ἀγαλλιάσονται ὀστέα τεταπεινωμένα.

You shall make me hear joy and gladness; my bones that were humbled shall greatly rejoice.

Ἀπόστρεψον τὸ πρόσωπόν σου ἀπὸ τῶν ἁμαρτιῶν μου καὶ πάσας τὰς ἀνομίας μου ἐξάλειψον.

Turn Your face from my sins, and blot out all my transgressions.

Καρδίαν καθαρὰν κτίσον ἐν ἐμοί, ὁ Θεός, καὶ πνεῦμα εὐθὲς ἐγκαίνισον ἐν τοῖς ἐγκάτοις μου.

Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me.

Μὴ ἀποῤῥίψῃς με ἀπὸ τοῦ προσώπου σου καὶ τὸ Πνεῦμά σου τὸ ἅγιον μὴ ἀντανέλῃς ἀπʼ ἐμοῦ.

Do not cast me away from Your presence, and do not take Your Holy Spirit from me.

Ἀπόδος μοι τὴν ἀγαλλίασιν τοῦ σωτηρίου σου καὶ πνεύματι ἡγεμονικῷ στήριξόν με.

Restore to me the joy of Your salvation, and uphold me with Your guiding Spirit.

Διδάξω ἀνόμους τὰς ὁδούς σου καὶ ἀσεβεῖς ἐπὶ σὲ ἐπιστρέψουσι.

I will teach transgressors Your ways, and the ungodly shall turn back to You.

Ῥῦσαί με ἐξ αἱμάτων, ὁ Θεός, ὁ Θεὸς τῆς σωτηρίας μου· ἀγαλλιάσεται ἡ γλῶσσά μου τὴν δικαιοσύνην σου.

Deliver me from bloodguiltiness, O God, the God of my salvation, and my tongue shall greatly rejoice in Your righteousness.

Κύριε, τὰ χείλη μου ἀνοίξεις καὶ τὸ στόμα μου ἀναγγελεῖ τὴν αἴνεσίν σου.

O Lord, You shall open my lips, and my mouth will declare Your praise.

Ὅτι εἰ ἠθέλησας θυσίαν, ἔδωκα ἄν· ὁλοκαυτώματα οὐκ εὐδοκήσεις.

For if You desired sacrifice, I would give it; You will not be pleased with whole burnt offerings.

Θυσία τῷ Θεῷ πνεῦμα συντετριμμένον· καρδίαν συντετριμμένην καὶ τεταπεινωμένην ὁ Θεὸς οὐκ ἐξουδενώσει.

A sacrifice to God is a broken spirit, a broken and humbled heart God will not despise.

Ἀγάθυνον, Κύριε, ἐν τῇ εὐδοκίᾳ σου τὴν Σιὼν καὶ οἰκοδομηθήτω τὰ τείχη Ἰερουσαλήμ.

Do good, O Lord, in Your good pleasure to Zion, and let the walls of Jerusalem be built.

Τότε εὐδοκήσεις θυσίαν δικαιοσύνης, ἀναφορὰν καὶ ὁλοκαυτώματα.

Then You will be pleased with a sacrifice of righteousness, with offerings and whole burnt offerings.

Τότε ἀνοίσουσιν ἐπὶ τὸ θυσιαστήριόν σου μόσχους. Καὶ ἐλέησόν με, ὁ Θεός.

Then shall they offer young bulls on Your altar. And have mercy on me, O God. [SAAS]

Guide me to paths of salvation, Mother of God, for I have befouled my soul with shameful sins and have squandered all my life in sloth. By your intercessions deliver me from all uncleanness. [Lash]

As I ponder the multitudes of dreadful things that I have done, wretch that I am, I tremble for the fearful day of judgement. But confident in your merciful compassion, like David I cry to you, 'Have mercy upon me, O God, in accordance with your great mercy'. [Lash]

O God, save your people and bless your inheritance. Look upon your world with mercy and compassion. Raise the Orthodox Christians in glory, and send down upon us your rich mercies,

Θεὸν ἀνθρώποις ἰδεῖν ἀδύνατον, ὂν οὐ τολμᾶ Ἀγγέλων ἀτενίσαι τὰ τάγματα· διὰ σοῦ δὲ Πάναγνε ὡράθη βροτοῖς, Λόγος σεσαρκωμένος· ὂν μεγαλύνοντες, σὺν ταῖς οὐρανίαις στρατιαῖς, σὲ μακαρίζομεν.

It is impossible for humans to see God, on whom the ranks of Angels dare not gaze. But through you, O All-pure, the incarnate Word has been seen by mortals. As we magnify him, with the heavenly armies we call you blessed. [Lash]

Ταῖς ἀρεταῖς ἀστράψαντες, ἴδωμεν ἐπιστάντες, ἐν ζωηφόρῳ μνήματι, ἄνδρας ἐν ἀστραπτούσαις, ἐσθήσεσι Μυροφόροις, κλινούσαις εἰς γῆν ὄψιν· τοῦ οὐρανοῦ δεσπόζοντος, ἔγερσιν διδαχθῶμεν, καὶ πρὸς ζωήν, ἐν μνημείῳ δράμωμεν σὺν τῷ Πέτρῳ, καὶ τὸ πραχθὲν θαυμάσαντες, μείνωμεν Χριστὸν βλέψαι.

Let us with virtues dazzling bright * envision two men standing * in the life-bearing sepulcher * wearing dazzling apparel * beside the myrrh-bearing women * who bow their faces to the earth. * Let us be taught the rising of * Him who rules over heaven. And let us run * unto life within the tomb, joining Peter. * Marveling at what has occurred, * let us abide to see Christ. [SD]

Γυναῖκες ἀκουτίσθητε.

Τῆς ἐντολῆς σου Κύριε, παρήκουσα ὁ ἄθλιος, καὶ γυμνωθεὶς τῆς σῆς δόξης, αἰσχύνης πέπλησμαι, οἴμοι! καὶ τῆς τρυφῆς ἐκβέβλημαι, τοῦ Παραδείσου εὔσπλαγχνε. Ἐλεῆμον ἐλέησον, τὸν στερηθέντα δικαίως, τῆς ἀγαθότητος τῆς σῆς.

Wretch that I am, I disobeyed * Your good commandment, O my Lord.* And being stripped of Your glory,* alas! with shame I am laden.* And I have been evicted from * the pure delights of Paradise.* O Merciful and Compassionate, * have mercy on me who rightly * have been deprived of Your goodness. Ἀποικισθέντες Κύριε, Παραδείσου τὸ πρῶτον, διὰ τῆς ξύλου βρώσεως, ἀντεισήγαγες πάλιν, διὰ Σταυροῦ καὶ τοῦ Πάθους, σοῦ Σωτὴρ καὶ Θεέ μου, διʼ οὗ ἡμᾶς ὀχύρωσον, τὴν Νηστείαν πληρῶσαι, ἁγνοπρεπῶς, καὶ τὴν θείαν Ἔγερσιν προσκυνῆσαι, τὸ Πάσχα τὸ σωτήριον, σὲ Τεκούσης πρεσβείαις.

We were expelled of old, O Lord, * from the Garden of Eden,* for wrongly eating from the tree.* But, O my God and Savior,* You once again have restored us * through Your Cross and Your Passion.* Thereby, O Master, fortify * and enable us purely to finish Lent * and to worship Your divine resurrection,* Pascha our saving Passover,* by the prayers of Your Mother. Πᾶσα πνοὴ αἰνεσάτω τὸν Κύριον. Αἰνεῖτε τὸν Κύριον ἐκ τῶν οὐρανῶν· αἰνεῖτε αὐτὸν ἐν τοῖς ὑψίστοις. Σοὶ πρέπει ὕμνος τῷ Θεῷ.

Let everything that breathes praise the Lord. Praise the Lord from the heavens, praise Him in the highest. It is fitting to sing a hymn to You, O God. [SAAS]

Praise Him, you heavens of heavens, and you waters above the heavens. Let them praise the Lord’s name.

For He spoke, and they were made; He commanded, and they were created.

Ἔστησεν αὐτὰ εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα καὶ εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα τοῦ αἰῶνος· πρόσταγμα ἔθετο, καὶ οὐ παρελεύσεται.

He established them forever and unto ages of ages; He set forth His ordinance, and it shall not pass away.

Αἰνεῖτε τὸν Κύριον ἐκ τῆς γῆς, δράκοντες καὶ πᾶσαι ἄβυσσοι.

Praise the Lord from the earth, you dragons and all the deeps.

Πῦρ, χάλαζα, χιών, κρύσταλλος, πνεῦμα καταιγίδος, τὰ ποιοῦντα τὸν λόγον αὐτοῦ.

Fire and hail, snow and ice, stormy wind, which perform His word.

Τὰ ὄρη καὶ πάντες οἱ βουνοί, ξύλα καρποφόρα καὶ πᾶσαι κέδροι.

Mountains and all the hills, fruitful trees and all cedars.

Τὰ θηρία καὶ πάντα τὰ κτήνη, ἑρπετὰ καὶ πετεινὰ πτερωτά.

Wild animals and all cattle, creeping things and flying birds.

Βασιλεῖς τῆς γῆς καὶ πάντες λαοί, ἄρχοντες καὶ πάντες κριταὶ γῆς.

Kings of the earth and all peoples, princes and all judges of the earth.

Νεανίσκοι καὶ παρθένοι, πρεσβύτεροι μετὰ νεωτέρων· αἰνεσάτωσαν τὸ ὄνομα Κυρίου, ὅτι ὑψώθη τὸ ὄνομα αὐτοῦ μόνου.

Young men and maidens, elders with younger, let them praise the Lord’s name, for His name alone is exalted.

Ἡ ἐξομολόγησις αὐτοῦ ἐπὶ γῆς καὶ οὐρανοῦ. καὶ ὑψώσει κέρας λαοῦ αὐτοῦ.

His thanksgiving is in earth and heaven. And He shall exalt the horn of His people.

Ὕμνος πᾶσι τοῖς ὁσίοις αὐτοῦ, τοῖς υἱοῖς Ἰσραήλ, λαῷ ἐγγίζοντι αὐτῷ.

A hymn for all His saints, for the children of Israel, a people who draw near to Him.

Ἄσατε τῷ Κυρίῳ ᾆσμα καινόν, ἡ αἴνεσις αὐτοῦ ἐν ἐκκλησίᾳ ὁσίων.

Sing to the Lord a new song, His praise in the assembly of His holy ones.

Εὐφρανθήτω Ἰσραὴλ ἐπὶ τῷ ποιήσαντι αὐτόν, καὶ οἱ υἱοὶ Σιὼν ἀγαλλιάσθωσαν ἐπὶ τῷ βασιλεῖ αὐτῶν.

Let Israel be glad in Him who made him, and let the children of Zion greatly rejoice in their King.

Αἰνεσάτωσαν τὸ ὄνομα αὐτοῦ ἐν χορῷ, ἐν τυμπάνῳ καὶ ψαλτηρίῳ ψαλάτωσαν αὐτῷ.

Let them praise His name with dance; with tambourine and harp let them sing to Him.

Ὅτι εὐδοκεῖ Κύριος ἐν τῷ λαῷ αὐτοῦ καὶ ὑψώσει πραεῖς ἐν σωτηρίᾳ.

For the Lord is pleased with His people, and He shall exalt the gentle with salvation.

Καυχήσονται ὅσιοι ἐν δόξῃ καὶ ἀγαλλιάσονται ἐπὶ τῶν κοιτῶν αὐτῶν.

The holy ones shall boast in glory, and they shall greatly rejoice on their beds.

Αἱ ὑψώσεις τοῦ Θεοῦ ἐν τῷ λάρυγγι αὐτῶν, καὶ ῥομφαῖαι δίστομοι ἐν ταῖς χερσὶν αὐτῶν.

The high praise of God shall be in their mouth and a two-edged sword in their hand.

Τοῦ ποιῆσαι ἐκδίκησιν ἐν τοῖς ἔθνεσιν, ἐλεγμοὺς ἐν τοῖς λαοῖς.

To deal retribution to the nations, reproving among the peoples.

Τοῦ δῆσαι τοὺς βασιλεῖς αὐτῶν ἐν πέδαις καὶ τοὺς ἐνδόξους αὐτῶν ἐν χειροπέδαις σιδηραῖς.

To shackle their kings with chains and their nobles with fetters of iron.

To fulfill among them the written judgment: this glory have all His holy ones. [SAAS]

Τῷ σῷ Σταυρῷ Χριστὲ Σωτήρ, ὁδήγησον ἡμᾶς ἐπὶ τὴν ἀλήθειάν σου, καὶ ῥῦσαι ἡμᾶς, τῶν παγίδων τοῦ ἐχθροῦ· ὁ ἀναστὰς ἐκ τῶν νεκρῶν, ἀνάστησον ἡμᾶς πεσόντας τῇ ἁμαρτίᾳ, ἐκτείνας τὴν χεῖρά σου, φιλάνθρωπε Κύριε, τῇ πρεσβείᾳ τῶν Ἁγίων σου.

Only-begotten Word of God, without being parted from the Father’s bosom, you came on earth through love for mankind, becoming man without change, and though impassible in your Godhead, you endured Cross and death in the flesh; but risen from the dead you granted the human race immortality, as you alone are all-powerful. The stadium of virtue is now open; those who wish to compete, enter therein, girded for the good contest of Lent, for those who compete according to the rules shall receive their laurels rightfully. Taking up the full armor of the Cross, let us do battle against the Enemy. As an impregnable wall, we have the Faith, prayer as our breastplate, and acts of mercy as our helmet. Instead of sword, there is fasting, which cuts every evil from the heart. He who does this shall attain a true crown from Christ, the King of all, on Judgment Day. [GKD]

Ἀδὰμ τοῦ Παραδείσου διώκεται, τροφῆς μεταλαβὼν ὡς παρήκοος, Μωσῆς θεόπτης ἐχρημάτισε, νηστείᾳ τὰ ὄμματα, τῆς ψυχῆς καθηράμενος. Adam was evicted from Paradise as one disobedient, after partaking of its luxury. Moses saw God, after cleansing the eyes of his soul by fasting. Hence if we desire to become residents of Paradise, let us divorce ourselves from baleful delights, and desiring to see God, as did Moses let us fast the Four Times Ten. By sincerely persevering in prayer and supplication, let us suppress the passions of our souls; let us avert the swellings of the flesh; thus lightened, let us set off on the journey to things above, where the choirs of angels in unbroken song sing praise to the undivided Trinity, to see the irresistible beauty of the Master. O Son of God and Giver of Life, we who set our hope on You entreat: Make us worthy of dancing with the armies of angels, O Christ, at the intercession of Your Mother, the Apostles, Martyrs and all the Saints. Ἔφθασε καιρός, ἡ τῶν πνευματικῶν ἀγώνων ἀρχή, ἡ κατὰ τῶν δαιμόνων νίκη, ἡ πάνοπλος ἐγκράτεια, ἡ τῶν Ἀγγέλων εὐπρέπεια, ἡ πρὸς Θεὸν παῤῥησία· διʼ αὐτῆς γὰρ Μωϋσῆς, γέγονε τῷ Κτίστῃ συνόμιλος, καὶ φωνὴν ἀοράτως, ἐν ταῖς ἀκοαῖς ὑπεδέξατο· Κύριε, διʼ αὐτῆς ἀξίωσον καὶ ἡμᾶς, προσκυνῆσαί σου τὰ Πάθη καὶ τὴν ἁγίαν Ἀνάστασιν, ὡς φιλάνθρωπος.

The time has come - the start of our spiritual contests, the victory over demons, the full armor of self-control, the angels’ dignity, the confidence before God. Thereby did Moses become conversant with the Creator, and heard the invisible voice. Lord, through fasting make us worthy to worship Your Passion and holy Resurrection, as You love humanity. [GKD]

Ὑπερευλογημένη ὑπάρχεις, Θεοτόκε Παρθένε· διὰ γὰρ τοῦ ἐκ σοῦ σαρκωθέντος, ὁ ᾅδης ἠχμαλώτισται, ὁ Ἀδὰμ ἀνακέκληται, ἡ κατάρα νενέκρωται, ἡ Εὔα ἠλευθέρωται, ὁ θάνατος τεθανάτωται, καὶ ἡμεις ἐζωοποιήθημεν· διὸ ἀνυμνοῦντες βοῶμεν· Εὐλογητὸς Χριστὸς ὁ Θεὸς ἡμῶν, ὁ οὕτως εὐδοκήσας δόξα σοι.

You are supremely blessed, O Virgin Theotokos. For through Him who from you became incarnate was Hades taken prisoner, and Adam has been summoned back; the curse has been neutralized, and Eve has been liberated; death has been put to death, and we have been brought to life. Therefore extolling we cry out: O Christ our God, You are blessed, for so was Your good pleasure. Glory to You! [SD]

Great Doxology

Δόξα σοι τῷ δείξαντι τὸ φῶς. Δόξα ἐν ὑψίστοις Θεῷ καὶ ἐπὶ γῆς εἰρήνη, ἐν ἀνθρώποις εὐδοκία.

Glory to you who have shown us the light. Glory in the highest to God. His peace is on earth, His good pleasure in mankind. [Lash]

Ὑμνοῦμέν σε, εὐλογοῦμέν σε, προσκυνοῦμέν σε, δοξολογοῦμέν σε, εὐχαριστοῦμέν σοι, διὰ τὴν μεγάλην σου δόξαν.
