Θεὸς Κύριος καὶ ἐπέφανεν ἡμῖν. Εὐλογημένος ὁ ἐρχόμενος ἐν ὀνόματι Κυρίου.

God is the Lord, and He revealed Himself to us. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. [SAAS]

Στίχ. αʹ. Ἐξομολογεῖσθε τῷ Κυρίῳ καὶ ἐπικαλεῖσθε τὸ ὄνομα τὸ ἅγιον αὐτοῦ.

Verse 1: Give thanks to the Lord and call upon His holy name.

Στίχ. βʹ. Πάντα τὰ ἔθνη ἐκύκλωσάν με, καὶ τῷ ὀνόματι Κυρίου ἠμυνάμην αὐτούς.

Verse 2: All the nations surrounded me, but in the name of the Lord I defended myself against them.

Στίχ. γʹ. Παρὰ Κυρίου ἐγένετο αὕτη καὶ ἔστι θαυμαστὴ ἐν ὀφθαλμοῖς ἡμῶν.

Verse 3: And this came about from the Lord, and it is wonderful in our eyes.

Τοῦ λίθου σφραγισθέντος.

Τοῦ λίθου σφραγισθέντος ὑπὸ τῶν Ἰουδαίων, καὶ στρατιωτῶν φυλασσόντων τὸ ἄχραντόν σου σῶμα, ἀνέστης τριήμερος Σωτήρ, δωρούμενος τῷ κόσμῳ τὴν ζωήν. Διὰ τοῦτο αἱ Δυνάμεις τῶν οὐρανῶν ἐβόων σοι Ζωοδότα· Δόξα τῇ ἀναστάσει σου Χριστέ, δόξα τῇ βασιλείᾳ σου, δόξα τῇ οἰκονομίᾳ σου, μόνε Φιλάνθρωπε.

When the stone had been sealed by the Jews, and while soldiers were guarding your spotless Body, you rose, O Saviour, on the third day, giving life to the world; and therefore the heavenly Powers cried out to you, Giver of life: Glory to your Resurrection, O Christ, glory to your Kingdom, glory to your Dispensation, only lover of mankind. Ἐν σοὶ Μῆτερ ἀκριβῶς διεσώθη τὸ κατʼ εἰκόνα· λαβοῦσα γὰρ τὸν Σταυρόν, ἠκολούθησας τῷ Χριστῷ, καὶ πράττουσα ἐδίδασκες, ὑπερορᾶν μὲν σαρκός, παρέρχεται γάρ· ἐπιμελεῖσθαι δὲ ψυχῆς, πράγματος ἀθανάτου· διὸ καὶ μετὰ Ἀγγέλων συναγάλλεται, ὁσία Μαρία τὸ πνεῦμά σου.

In you, O Mother, is preserved undistorted what was made in the image of God; for taking up the cross, you followed Christ and by example taught, that we should overlook the flesh, since it passes away, and instead look after the soul, since it is immortal. And therefore, O devout Mary, your spirit rejoices with the angels. [SD]

Ὁ διʼ ἡμᾶς γεννηθεὶς ἐκ Παρθένου, καὶ σταύρωσιν ὑπομείνας Ἀγαθέ, ὁ θανάτῳ τὸν θάνατον σκυλεύσας, καὶ ἔγερσιν δείξας ὡς Θεός, μὴ παρίδῃς οὓς ἔπλασας τῇ χειρί σου· δεῖξον τὴν φιλανθρωπίαν σου Ἐλεῆμον· δέξαι τὴν τεκοῦσάν σε Θεοτόκον, πρεσβεύουσαν ὑπὲρ ἡμῶν, καὶ σῶσον Σωτὴρ ἡμῶν, λαὸν ἀπεγνωσμένον.

You were born for us from a Virgin, and endured crucifixion, loving Lord; by your death you despoiled Death, and revealed resurrection as God; do not despise those whom you fashioned with your own hand; show us your compassion, O Merciful; accept the Mother of God who bore you as she intercedes for us, and save, our Saviour, a people in despair. [Lash]

Τῆς παναγίας, ἀχράντου, ὑπερευλογημένης, ἐνδόξου, δεσποίνης ἡμῶν Θεοτόκου καὶ ἀειπαρθένου Μαρίας μετὰ πάντων τῶν ἁγίων μνημονεύσαντες, ἑαυτοὺς καὶ ἀλλήλους καὶ πᾶσαν τὴν ζωὴν ἡμῶν Χριστῷ τῷ Θεῷ παραθώμεθα.

Commemorating our all-holy, pure, most blessed and glorious Lady, Mother of God and Ever-Virgin Mary, with all the Saints, let us entrust ourselves and one another and our whole life to Christ our God.

Τὸν τάφον σου Σωτήρ, στρατιῶται τηροῦντες, νεκροὶ τῇ ἀστραπῇ, τοῦ ὀφθέντος Ἀγγέλου, ἐγένοντο κηρύττοντος, γυναιξὶ τὴν ἀνάστασιν. Σὲ δοξάζομεν, τὸν τῆς φθορᾶς καθαιρέτην, σοὶ προσπίπτομεν, τῷ ἀναστάντι ἐκ τάφου, καὶ μόνῳ Θεῷ ἡμῶν.

The soldiers watching your grave became as dead men at the lightning flash of the Angel who appeared and proclaimed to the Women the Resurrection. We glorify you, the destroyer of corruption; we fall down before you, risen from the grave and alone our God. [Lash]

Σταυρῷ προσηλωθείς, ἑκουσίως Οἰκτίρμον, ἐν μνήματι τεθείς, ὡς θνητὸς Ζωοδότα, τὸ κράτος συνέτριψας, Δυνατὲ τῷ θανάτῳ σου. Σὲ γὰρ ἔφριξαν, οἱ πυλωροὶ οἱ τοῦ ᾅδου· σὺ συνήγειρας, τοὺς ἀπʼ αἰῶνος θανόντας, ὡς μόνος φιλάνθρωπος.

You were willingly nailed to the Cross, O Merciful one, and laid in a tomb as a mortal, O Giver of life. By your death, O Powerful one, you smashed its might; for Hell' gatekeepers trembled before you; you raised with you the dead from every age, for you alone love mankind. [Lash]

When Gabriel addressed you, O Virgin, with his 'Hail', as he spoke the Master of all things became incarnate in you the holy Ark, as righteous David sang. You were proclaimed wider than the heavens, for you carried your Creator. Glory to him who dwelt in you, glory to him who came forth from you, glory to him who has set us free through your bearing child. [Lash]

Γυναῖκες πρὸς τὸ μνῆμα, παρεγένοντο ὄρθριαι, καὶ ἀγγελικὴν ὀπτασίαν θεασάμεναι ἔτρεμον· ὁ τάφος ἐξήστραπτε ζωήν, τὸ θαῦμα κατέπληττεν αὐτάς· διὰ τοῦτο ἀπελθοῦσαι, τοῖς Μαθηταῖς ἐκήρυττον τὴν ἔγερσιν. Τὸν ᾅδην ἐσκύλευσε Χριστός, ὡς μόνος κραταιὸς καὶ δυνατός, καὶ φθαρέντας συνήγειρε πάντας, τὸν τῆς κατακρίσεως φόβον, λύσας δυνάμει σταυροῦ.

The women came to your tomb at dawn and when they saw a vision of an Angel they trembled; the tomb blazed forth life; the marvel amazed them; and so going back to the disciples they proclaimed the Resurrection: Christ has despoiled Hell, as alone mighty and powerful, and has raised up all those in corruption, dispelling the fear of condemnation by the power of the Cross. [Lash]

Mary, holy vessel of the Master, raise us up who have fallen into the pit of dread despair, of offences and afflictions; for you are the salvation, the help and the mighty protection of sinners, and you save your servants. [Lash]

Blessed are You, O Lord, teach me Your statutes.

Τῶν Ἀγγέλων ὁ δῆμος, κατεπλάγη ὁρῶν σε, ἐν νεκροῖς λογισθέντα, τοῦ θανάτου δὲ Σωτήρ, τὴν ἰσχὺν καθελόντα, καὶ σὺν ἑαυτῷ τὸν Ἀδὰμ ἐγείραντα, καὶ ἐξ ᾍδου πάντας ἐλευθερώσαντα.

When the hosts of the Angels saw how You were accounted among the dead, they all marveled. You, O Savior, are the One who destroyed the might of death; and when You arose You raised Adam with yourself and from Hades liberated everyone. [SD]

Τί τὰ μύρα, συμπαθῶς τοῖς δάκρυσιν, ὦ Μαθήτριαι κιρνᾶτε; ὁ ἀστράπτων ἐν τῷ τάφῳ Ἄγγελος, προσεφθέγγετο ταῖς Μυροφόροις· Ἴδετε ὑμεῖς τὸν τάφον καὶ ᾔσθητε· ὁ Σωτὴρ γὰρ ἐξανέστη τοῦ μνήματος.

“Why do you mingle the ointments with your tears full of pity, O women disciples?” Thus the Angel who was shining in the tomb cried to the myrrh-bearing women. “See for yourselves the empty tomb and understand, that the Savior has risen from the sepulcher.”

Λίαν πρωΐ, Μυροφόροι ἔδραμον, πρὸς τὸ μνῆμά σου θρηνολογοῦσαι· ἀλλʼ ἐπέστη, πρὸς αὐτὰς ὁ Ἄγγελος, καὶ εἶπε· θρήνου ὁ καιρὸς πέπαυται, μὴ κλαίετε, τὴν Ἀνάστασιν δέ, Ἀποστόλοις εἴπατε.

Very early in the morning, the myrrh-bearing women were hastening to Your tomb lamenting. But the Angel appeared to them and uttered, “The time for lamentation has ended; weep no more. Go announce the Resurrection to the Apostles.”

Εὐλογητὸς εἶ, Κύριε, δίδαξόν με τὰ δικαιώματά σου.

Blessed are You, O Lord, teach me Your statutes.

Μυροφόροι γυναῖκες, μετὰ μύρων ἐλθοῦσαι, πρὸς τὸ μνῆμά σου, Σῶτερ ἐνηχοῦντο. Ἀγγέλου τρανῶς, πρὸς αὐτὰς φθεγγομένου· Τί μετὰ νεκρῶν, τὸν ζώντα λογίζεσθε; ὡς Θεὸς γάρ, ἐξανέστη τοῦ μνήματος.

When the myrrh-bearing women had come with their spices to Your sepulcher, O Savior, they heard the voice of an Angel clearly speaking to them, “Why do you account among the dead the One who lives? For as God, He has risen from the sepulcher.”

Προσκυνοῦμεν Πατέρα, καὶ τὸν τούτου Υἱόν τε, καὶ τὸ Ἅγιον Πνεῦμα, τὴν Ἁγίαν Τριάδα, ἐν μιᾷ τῇ οὐσίᾳ, σὺν τοῖς Σεραφείμ, κράζοντες τό· Ἅγιος, Ἅγιος, Ἅγιος εἶ, Κύριε.

We bow down in worship to the Father and His Son and the Holy Spirit, the Holy Trinity, one in essence; and we cry aloud with the Seraphim: Holy, Holy, Holy are You, O Lord.

Ζωοδότην τεκοῦσα, ἐλυτρώσω Παρθένε, τὸν Ἀδὰμ ἁμαρτίας, χαρμονὴν δὲ τῇ Εὔᾳ, ἀντὶ λύπης παρέσχες, ῥεύσαντα ζωῆς, ἴθυνε πρὸς ταύτην δέ, ὁ ἐκ σοῦ σαρκωθείς Θεὸς καὶ ἄνθρωπος.

Giving birth to the Giver of life, O Virgin, you delivered Adam from sin, and to Eve you have rendered joy in place of sorrow. He who from you became incarnate, God and man, has directed to life him who fell from it.

Ἡ τοῦ λῃστοῦ μετάνοια, τὸν Παράδεισον ἐσύλησεν, ὁ δὲ θρῆνος τῶν Μυροφόρων τὴν χαρὰν ἐμήνυσεν· ὅτι ἀνέστης Χριστὲ ὁ Θεός, παρέχων τῷ κόσμῳ τὸ μέγα ἔλεος.

The Thief’s repentance plundered Paradise, but the Myrrh-bearers’ lament disclosed the joy that you had risen, Christ God, granting the world great mercy. [Lash]

Ἐν τῷ θλίβεσθαί με, εἰσάκουσόν μου τῶν ὀδυνῶν, Κύριε σοὶ κράζω.

When I am afflicted, I cry to you, O Lord, hearken to my pains. [Lash]

Τοῖς ἐρημικοῖς, ἄπαυστος ὁ θεῖος πόθος ἐγγίνεται, κόσμου οὖσι τοῦ ματαίου ἐκτός.

For those who dwell in the desert the longing for God never ceases, for they are far from the world’s vanity. [Lash]

Δόξα· καὶ νῦν.

Glory. Both now.

Ἁγίῳ Πνεύματι, τιμὴ καὶ δόξα, ὥσπερ Πατρί, πρέπει ἅμα καὶ Υἱῷ· διὰ τοῦτο ᾂσωμεν τῇ τριαδικῇ μονοκρατορίᾳ.

To the Holy Spirit, as to the Father and the Son, are due honour and glory; and so let us sing to the Trinity, a single might. [Lash]

Εἰς τὰ ὄρη τῶν σῶν, ὕψωσάς με νόμων, ἀρεταῖς ἐκλάμπρυνον, ὁ Θεός, ἵνα ὑμνῶ σε.

Having lifted me up to the mountains of your laws, make me shine, O God, with virtues, that I may sing your praise. [Lash]

Δεξιᾷ σου χειρὶ λαβὼν σὺ Λόγε, φύλαξόν με, φρούρησον, μὴ πῦρ με φλέξῃ τῆς ἁμαρτίας.

Take me with your right hand, O Word, guard me and keep me, lest the fire of sin scorch me. [Lash]

Δόξα· καὶ νῦν.

Ἁγίῳ Πνεύματι, πᾶσα ἡ κτίσις καινουργεῖται, παλινδρομοῦσα εἰς τὸ πρῶτον· ἰσοσθενὲς γάρ ἐστι Πατρὶ καὶ Λόγῳ.

In the Holy Spirit all creation is made new and hastens back to its first condition; for he is equal in strength to the Father and the Word. [Lash]

Ἐπὶ τοῖς εἰρηκόσι μοι· Ὁδεύσωμεν εἰς τὰς αὐλὰς τοῦ Κυρίου· εὐφράνθη μου τὸ πνεῦμα, συγχαίρει ἡ καρδία.

With those who said to me: Let us journey to the courts of the Lord, my Spirit was glad and my heart rejoices. [Lash]

As the Father has sent me, even so I send you.” And when he had said this, he breathed on them, and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained.” Now Thomas, one of the twelve, called the Twin, was not with them when Jesus came. For behold, I was conceived in transgressions, and in sins my mother bore me.

Behold, You love truth; You showed me the unknown and secret things of Your wisdom.

Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me.

Do not cast me away from Your presence, and do not take Your Holy Spirit from me.

Ἀπόδος μοι τὴν ἀγαλλίασιν τοῦ σωτηρίου σου καὶ πνεύματι ἡγεμονικῷ στήριξόν με.

Restore to me the joy of Your salvation, and uphold me with Your guiding Spirit.

I will teach transgressors Your ways, and the ungodly shall turn back to You.

O Lord, You shall open my lips, and my mouth will declare Your praise.

For if You desired sacrifice, I would give it; You will not be pleased with whole burnt offerings.

Θυσία τῷ Θεῷ πνεῦμα συντετριμμένον· καρδίαν συντετριμμένην καὶ τεταπεινωμένην ὁ Θεὸς οὐκ ἐξουδενώσει.

A sacrifice to God is a broken spirit, a broken and humbled heart God will not despise.

Ἀγάθυνον, Κύριε, ἐν τῇ εὐδοκίᾳ σου τὴν Σιὼν καὶ οἰκοδομηθήτω τὰ τείχη Ἰερουσαλήμ.

Do good, O Lord, in Your good pleasure to Zion, and let the walls of Jerusalem be built.

Συγκεκλεισμένων Δέσποτα, τῶν θυρῶν ὡς εἰσῆλθες, τοὺς Ἀποστόλους ἔπλησας, Πνεύματος παναγίου, εἰρηνικῶς ἐμφυσήσας, οἷς δεσμεῖν τε καὶ λύειν, τὰς ἁμαρτίας εἴρηκας· καὶ ὀκτὼ μεθʼ ἡμέρας, τὴν σὴν πλευράν, τῷ Θωμᾷ ὑπέδειξας καὶ τὰς χεῖρας, μεθʼ οὗ βοῶμεν· Κύριος, καὶ Θεὸς σὺ ὑπάρχεις.

The doors where the Apostles were * being closed shut, O Master, * You entered and You gave them peace, * and when You blew upon them * You gave them the Holy Spirit, * and enjoined them concerning * binding of sins and loosing them. * And coming eight days later, You showed Your side * and Your hands as tangible proof to Thomas. * With him we also cry aloud: * You are our Lord and our God. Ὑπόδειγμα μετανοίας, σὲ ἔχοντες πανοσία Μαρία Χριστὸν δυσώπει, ἐν τῷ καιρῷ τῆς Νηστείας, τοῦτο ἡμῖν δωρηθῆναι, ὅπως ἐν πίστει καὶ πόθῳ, σὲ ᾄσμασιν εὐφημῶμεν.

We have you as an example * of true repentance, O devout Mary. * To Christ pray intently * that in this season of the Fast * we be granted to praise you * in songs with faith and longing. [SD]

For He spoke, and they were made; He commanded, and they were created.

He established them forever and unto ages of ages; He set forth His ordinance, and it shall not pass away.

Praise the Lord from the earth, you dragons and all the deeps.

Πῦρ, χάλαζα, χιών, κρύσταλλος, πνεῦμα καταιγίδος, τὰ ποιοῦντα τὸν λόγον αὐτοῦ.

Fire and hail, snow and ice, stormy wind, which perform His word.

Τὰ ὄρη καὶ πάντες οἱ βουνοί, ξύλα καρποφόρα καὶ πᾶσαι κέδροι.

Mountains and all the hills, fruitful trees and all cedars.

Τὰ θηρία καὶ πάντα τὰ κτήνη, ἑρπετὰ καὶ πετεινὰ πτερωτά.

Wild animals and all cattle, creeping things and flying birds.

Βασιλεῖς τῆς γῆς καὶ πάντες λαοί, ἄρχοντες καὶ πάντες κριταὶ γῆς.

Kings of the earth and all peoples, princes and all judges of the earth.

Νεανίσκοι καὶ παρθένοι, πρεσβύτεροι μετὰ νεωτέρων· αἰνεσάτωσαν τὸ ὄνομα Κυρίου, ὅτι ὑψώθη τὸ ὄνομα αὐτοῦ μόνου.

Young men and maidens, elders with younger, let them praise the Lord’s name, for His name alone is exalted.

Ἡ ἐξομολόγησις αὐτοῦ ἐπὶ γῆς καὶ οὐρανοῦ. καὶ ὑψώσει κέρας λαοῦ αὐτοῦ.

His thanksgiving is in earth and heaven. And He shall exalt the horn of His people.

Ὕμνος πᾶσι τοῖς ὁσίοις αὐτοῦ, τοῖς υἱοῖς Ἰσραήλ, λαῷ ἐγγίζοντι αὐτῷ.

A hymn for all His saints, for the children of Israel, a people who draw near to Him.

Ἄσατε τῷ Κυρίῳ ᾆσμα καινόν, ἡ αἴνεσις αὐτοῦ ἐν ἐκκλησίᾳ ὁσίων.

Sing to the Lord a new song, His praise in the assembly of His holy ones.

Εὐφρανθήτω Ἰσραὴλ ἐπὶ τῷ ποιήσαντι αὐτόν, καὶ οἱ υἱοὶ Σιὼν ἀγαλλιάσθωσαν ἐπὶ τῷ βασιλεῖ αὐτῶν.

Let Israel be glad in Him who made him, and let the children of Zion greatly rejoice in their King.

Αἰνεσάτωσαν τὸ ὄνομα αὐτοῦ ἐν χορῷ, ἐν τυμπάνῳ καὶ ψαλτηρίῳ ψαλάτωσαν αὐτῷ.

Let them praise His name with dance; with tambourine and harp let them sing to Him.

Ὅτι εὐδοκεῖ Κύριος ἐν τῷ λαῷ αὐτοῦ καὶ ὑψώσει πραεῖς ἐν σωτηρίᾳ.

For the Lord is pleased with His people, and He shall exalt the gentle with salvation.

Καυχήσονται ὅσιοι ἐν δόξῃ καὶ ἀγαλλιάσονται ἐπὶ τῶν κοιτῶν αὐτῶν.

The holy ones shall boast in glory, and they shall greatly rejoice on their beds.

Αἱ ὑψώσεις τοῦ Θεοῦ ἐν τῷ λάρυγγι αὐτῶν, καὶ ῥομφαῖαι δίστομοι ἐν ταῖς χερσὶν αὐτῶν.

The high praise of God shall be in their mouth and a two-edged sword in their hand.

Τοῦ ποιῆσαι ἐκδίκησιν ἐν τοῖς ἔθνεσιν, ἐλεγμοὺς ἐν τοῖς λαοῖς.

To deal retribution to the nations, reproving among the peoples.

Τοῦ δῆσαι τοὺς βασιλεῖς αὐτῶν ἐν πέδαις καὶ τοὺς ἐνδόξους αὐτῶν ἐν χειροπέδαις σιδηραῖς.

To shackle their kings with chains and their nobles with fetters of iron.

The Kingdom of God is not food and drink, but righteousness and ascetic practice and holiness; therefore rich men will never enter it, but only those who place their treasures into the hands of the needy. This is what David the Prophet teaches when he says, “Righteous is the man, who is merciful day in and out, who delights in the Lord. He walks in the light; he will not stumble.” All of this was written for our edification, that, while fasting, we do acts of kindness; and the Lord will give us, instead of earthly gifts, the things of heaven. You are supremely blessed, O Virgin Theotokos. Therefore extolling we cry out: O Christ our God, You are blessed, for so was Your good pleasure. Glory to You! [SD]

Glory to you who have shown us the light. Glory in the highest to God. His peace is on earth, His good pleasure in mankind. [Lash]
