As the Third Antiphon is being sung (with its verses), the Priest and Deacon bow three times before the holy Table. Then the Priest gives the holy Gospel to the Deacon, who kisses the Priest’s hand as he receives it, and then circles the holy Table with the Priest following him. Preceded by altar servers holding candles and fans, they exit through the north door for the so-called Small Entrance. When there is no Deacon, the Priest takes the holy Gospel and holds it up in front of his face. When they reach the center of the church, they stop and bow their heads, and the Deacon says in a low voice:

Master, Lord our God, you have set orders and armies of Angels and Archangels in heaven to minister to your glory; grant that, with our entrance, holy Angels may enter, concelebrating with us, and with us glorifying your goodness. For to You belong all glory, honor, and worship, to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, now and forever and to the ages of ages. Amen.

When those who were with Mary came, anticipating the dawn, and found the stone rolled away from the sepulchre, they heard from the Angel, ‘Why do you seek among the dead, as though he were mortal, the One who exists in everlasting light.

Holy God, at rest in the holy place, hymned by the Seraphim with the thrice-holy song, glorified by the Cherubim and worshipped by every heavenly Power, out of non-existence you brought the universe into being and created humankind according to your image and likeness, adorning it with every gift of your grace. You give wisdom and understanding to those who ask, and you do not reject the sinner, but for our salvation you have established repentance. You have counted us, your humble and unworthy servants, worthy to stand at this time before the glory of your holy altar, and to offer you due worship and praise. Accept, Master, the thrice-holy hymn even from the mouth of us sinners, and visit us in your goodness. Pardon us every offence, voluntary and involuntary; sanctify our souls and bodies, and grant that we may worship you in holiness all the days of our life; at the prayers of the holy Mother of God and of all the Saints who have been well-pleasing to you in every age.

In those days, the apostles returned to Jerusalem from the mount called Olivet, which is near Jerusalem, a sabbath day’s journey away; and when they had entered, they went up to the upper room, where they were staying, Peter and John and James and Andrew, Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew, James the son of Alphaeus and Simon the Zealot and Judas the son of James. All these with one accord devoted themselves to prayer, together with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brothers. In those days Peter stood up among the brethren (the company of persons was in all about a hundred and twenty), and said, “Brethren, the scripture had to be fulfilled, which the Holy Spirit spoke beforehand by the mouth of David, concerning Judas who was guide to those who arrested Jesus. For he was numbered among us, and was allotted his share in this ministry. So one of the men who have accompanied us during all the time that the Lord Jesus went in and out among us, beginning from the baptism of John until the day when he was taken up from us-one of these men must become with us a witness to his resurrection.” And they put forward two, Joseph called Barsabbas, who was surnamed Justus, and Matthias. And they prayed and said, “Lord, who know the hearts of all men, show which one of these two you have chosen to take the place in this ministry and apostleship from which Judas turned aside, to go to his own place.” And they cast lots for them, and the lot fell on Matthias; and he was enrolled with the eleven apostles.

No one has ever seen God; the only-begotten Son, who is in the bosom of the Father, he has made him known. And this is the testimony of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, “Who are you?” He confessed, he did not deny, but confessed, “I am not the Christ.” And they asked him, “What then? Are you Elijah?” He said, “I am not.” “Are you the prophet?” And he answered, “No.” They said to him then, “Who are you? let us have an answer for those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?” He said, “I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness, ‘Make straight the way of the Lord,’ as the prophet Isaiah said.” Now they had been sent from the Pharisees. They asked him, “Then why are you baptizing, if you are neither the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the prophet?” John answered them, “I baptize with water; but among you stands one whom you do not know, even he who comes after me, who ranks before me, the thong of whose sandal I am not worthy to untie.” This took place in Bethany beyond the Jordan, where John was baptizing. None of those who are entangled in carnal desires and pleasures is worthy to approach or draw near or minister to you, King of glory; for to serve you is great and awesome even for the heavenly powers. Yet on account of your inexpressible and boundless love for mankind you became man without change or alteration and were named our High Priest; and as Master of all you have committed to us the sacred ministry of this liturgy without shedding of blood. For you alone, Lord our God, are Ruler over all things in heaven and on earth, mounted on the throne of the Cherubim, Lord of the Seraphim and King of Israel, the only Holy One, resting in the holy place. Therefore I entreat you, who alone are good and ready to hear: Look upon me, your sinful and unprofitable servant, and purify my soul and heart from an evil conscience. By the power of your Holy Spirit enable me, clothed with the grace of the priesthood, to stand at this your Holy Table and celebrate the mystery of your holy and most pure Body and your precious Blood. For to you I come, bending my neck and praying: Do not turn away your face from me, nor reject me from among your children, but count me, your sinful and unworthy servant, worthy to offer these gifts to you. For you are the one who offers and is offered, who receives and is distributed, Christ our God, and to you we give glory, together with your Father, who is without beginning, and your all-holy, good and life-giving Spirit, now and for ever, and to the ages of ages. Amen.

We, who in a mystery represent the Cherubim and sing the thrice-holy hymn to the life-giving Trinity, let us now lay aside every care of this life. * For we are about to receive the King of all. Invisibly escorted by the angelic hosts. Alleluia. (3)

I believe in one God, * Father, Almighty,* Maker of heaven and earth,* and of all things visible and invisible. And in one Lord, Jesus Christ,* the only-begotten Son of God, * begotten from the Father * before all ages, * Light from Light, * true God from true God, * begotten * not made, * consubstantial with the Father,* through him all things were made. * For our sake and for our salvation * he came down from heaven, * and was incarnate from the Holy Spirit * and the Virgin Mary * and became man. * He was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate,* and suffered and was buried; * he rose again on the third day, * in accordance with the Scriptures, * and ascended into heaven * and is seated at the right hand of the Father. * He is coming again in glory * to judge the living and the dead, * and his kingdom will have no end. And in the Holy Spirit, * the Lord, * the Giver of life, * who proceeds from the Father, * who together with Father and Son is worshipped * and together glorified; * who spoke through the Prophets. * In one, Holy, * Catholic and Apostolic Church. * I confess one Baptism * for the forgiveness of sins. * I await the resurrection of the dead * and the life of the age to come.

It is right and fitting to hymn you, to bless you, to praise you, to give you thanks, to worship you in every place of your dominion; for you are God, ineffable, incomprehensible, invisible, inconceivable, ever existing, eternally the same; you and your only-begotten Son and your Holy Spirit. You brought us out of non-existence into being, and when we had fallen you raised us up again, and left nothing undone until you had brought us up to heaven and had granted us your Kingdom that is to come. For all these things we give thanks to you, and to your only-begotten Son and your Holy Spirit; for all the benefits that we have received, known and unknown, manifest and hidden. We thank you also for this liturgy which you have been pleased to accept from our hands, though there stand around you thousands of archangels and tens of thousands of angels, the Cherubim and the Seraphim, six-winged and many-eyed, soaring aloft upon their wings,

With these blessed Powers, Master, Lover of mankind, we also cry aloud and say: Holy are you and all-holy, you and your only-begotten Son and your Holy Spirit. Holy are you and all-holy, and magnificent is your glory. This is how you loved your world: you gave your only-begotten Son, so that everyone who believes in him might not perish, but have eternal life. And, when he had come and had fulfilled the whole dispensation for us, in the night in which he was given up, or rather gave himself up, for the life of the world, he took bread in his holy, most pure and unblemished hands and, when he had given thanks and had blessed, sanctified and broken it, gave it to his holy Disciples and Apostles, saying:

For the holy Prophet, Forerunner and Baptist John, the holy, glorious and all-praised Apostles, for Saint N, whose memory we keep today, and for all your Saints, at whose prayers visit us, O God. Remember too all those who have fallen asleep in hope of resurrection to eternal life (N and N), and give them rest where the light of your countenance watches. Also we beseech you: Remember, Lord, all Orthodox bishops, who rightly discern the word of your truth, the whole order of presbyters, the diaconate in Christ, all the clergy and the whole monastic order. Also we offer you this spiritual worship for the whole world, for the holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church, for those who live in chastity and holiness of life; for our faithful Christian rulers, and all their household. Grant them, Lord, a peaceful reign, so that in their tranquillity we too may live calm and peaceful lives in godliness and holiness.

PRAYERS OF HOLY COMMUNION

The selection and text of the following prayers may be different from what is used in your parish.

I believe and confess, Lord, that You are truly the Christ, the Son of the living God, who came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am the first. I also believe that this is truly Your pure Body and that this is truly Your precious Blood. Therefore, I pray to You, have mercy on me and forgive my transgressions, voluntary and involuntary, in word and deed, in knowledge or in ignorance. And make me worthy, without condemnation, to partake of Your pure sacrament for the remission of sins and for eternal life. Amen.

As I am about to receive holy communion, * O Maker, I pray You not burn me partaking, * since You are fire consuming the unworthy, * but rather purge me of any defilement.

Of your mystical Supper, Son of God, receive me today as a communicant; for I will not tell of the Mystery to your enemies; I will not give you a kiss, like Judas; but like the Thief I confess you: Remember me, Lord, in your Kingdom.

You see the deifying Blood: have fear. * It is a coal consuming the unworthy. * God’s Body deifies and nourishes * Me strangely; both my spirit and my mind.

You have smitten me with longing, O Christ, and changed me by your divine love; but with your immaterial fire burn up my sins and count me worthy to be filled with delight in you, that as I leap for joy, O Good One, I may magnify your first and second Comings.

How shall I, the unworthy, enter among the splendours of your Saints? For if I dare to enter with them into the bridal chamber, my dress convicts me, for it is not a wedding garment, and I shall be bound and cast out by the Angels. Cleanse the stain of my soul, Lord, and save me, as you love humankind.

Master, lover of humankind, Lord Jesus Christ, my God, do not let these holy Mysteries be for my condemnation because I am unworthy, but rather for the cleansing and sanctification of both soul and body and as a pledge of the life and kingdom to come. It is good for me to cleave to God, to place in the Lord the hope of my salvation.

We thank you, Lord, lover of mankind, benefactor of our souls, that you have counted us worthy today of your heavenly and immortal Mysteries. Make straight our way, establish us all in the fear of you, watch over our life, and make firm our steps, through the prayers and intercessions of the glorious Mother of God and Ever-Virgin Mary, and of all your Saints.

Evlogetaria for the Dead

αʹ.

Mode pl. 1.

Blessed are You, O Lord, teach me Your statutes.

The choir of Saints has found the source of life and the door of Paradise; may I too find the way through repentance; I am the lost sheep, call me back, O Saviour, and save me. [Lash]

Blessed are You, O Lord, teach me Your statutes.

Of old you formed me from nothing and honoured me with your divine image, but because I transgressed your commandment, you returned me to the earth from which I was taken; bring me back to your likeness, my ancient beauty. [Lash]

Blessed are You, O Lord, teach me Your statutes.

I am an image of your ineffable glory, though I bear the marks of offences; take pity on your creature, Master, and with compassion cleanse me; and give me the longed-for fatherland, making me once again a citizen of Paradise. [Lash]

Blessed are You, O Lord, teach me Your statutes.

Give rest, O God, to your servant(s), and settle him (her/them) in Paradise, where the choirs of the Saints and all the Just shine out like beacons; give rest to your servant(s) who has (have) fallen asleep, overlooking all his (her/their) offences. [Lash]

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit.

Let us devoutly hymn the threefold light of the one Godhead as we cry: Holy are you, the Father without beginning, the Son likewise without beginning and the divine Spirit; enlighten us who worship you in faith, and snatch us from the everlasting fire. [Lash]

Both now and for ever, and to the ages of ages. Amen.

With the Saints give rest, O Christ, to the soul(s) of Your servant(s) where there is no pain, no sorrow, no sighing, but life everlasting. [GOA]

Among the spirits of the righteous perfected in faith, give rest, O Savior, to the soul(s) of Your servant, keeping it (them) in the blessed life which is from You, O loving One. [GOA]

In your place of rest, O Lord, where all Your saints repose, give rest also to the soul of Your servant, for You alone are immortal. [GOA]

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit.

You are our God who descended into Hades and did away with the pains of those who had been bound; give rest, O Saviour, also to the soul(s) of your servant(s). [Lash]

Both now and for ever, and to the ages of ages. Amen.

You the only pure and spotless Virgin, who ineffably gave birth to God, intercede for mercy and forgiveness of the soul of your servant(s). [Lash]

O God of spirits and all flesh, who trampled down death and crushed the devil, giving life to your world; do you, Lord, give rest to the soul(s) of your servant(s) N.
