LITURGY OF ST. JOHN CHRYSOSTOM

Ἤ, ἀντὶ τῶν Ἀντιφώνων, κατὰ τὸ τυπικόν, ψάλλονται τὰ Τυπικὰ καὶ οἱ Μακαρισμοί.

An optional alternative to the Antiphons are the Typika (Psalms 102 and 145), and the Beatitudes with the appointed troparia, which are provided here.

In Your kingdom. Remember us, O Lord, when You come in Your kingdom. Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven [RSV]

Μακάριοι οἱ πενθοῦντες, ὅτι αὐτοὶ παρακληθήσονται.

Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted. [RSV]

Μακάριοι οἱ πρᾳεῖς, ὅτι αὐτοὶ κληρονομήσουσι τὴν γῆν.

Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth. [RSV]

Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy. [RSV]

Τὰς παλάμας Ἰησοῦ, προσηλώσας ἐν Σταυρῷ τὰ ἔθνη πάντα, ἐκ τῆς πλάνης συλλαβών, πρὸς ἐπίγνωσιν τὴν σήν, συνεκαλέσω Σωτήρ.

When you nailed your palms to the Cross, O Jesu, and gathered in all the nations from error, you invited them to knowledge of you, O Saviour. [Lash]

Μακάριοι οἱ καθαροὶ τῇ καρδίᾳ, ὅτι αὐτοὶ τὸν Θεὸν ὄψονται.

Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God. [RSV]

Joseph, who received God, come, stand with us and cry, 'He has risen, Jesus the redeemer, who raised Adam in his compassion!' [Lash]

Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God. [RSV]

Let the twelve Disciples rejoice with us, with the Myrrhbearing women, with Joseph and Christ’s other Disciples, men and women. [Lash]

Blessed are you, holy Lady from the root of Jesse. From you according to the flesh sprang Christ, the rod and the flower, for our sake. [Lash]

Μακάριοι ἐστὲ ὅταν ὀνειδίσωσιν ὑμᾶς, καὶ διώξωσι, καὶ εἴπωσι πᾶν πονηρὸν ῥῆμα καθʼ ὑμῶν, ψευδόμενοι ἕνεκεν ἐμοῦ.

Blessed are you when men revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely [for my sake]. [RSV]

Σινδόνι σε εἱλήσας, κατέθετο Χριστέ, Ἰωσὴφ ὁ εὐσχήμων ἐν μνήματι, μυρίσας δὲ τὸν λυθέντα σου ναόν, τοῦ σώματος, προσεκύλισε, λίθον μέγαν τῇ σορῷ.

Having wrapped you in a winding sheet, O Christ, the noble Joseph laid you in a grave. having anointed the temple of your body which had been destroyed, he rolled a great stone to the mouth of the sepulchre. [Lash]

Χαίρετε καὶ ἀγαλλιᾶσθε, ὅτι ὁ μισθὸς ὑμῶν πολὺς ἐν τοῖς οὐρανοῖς.

Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven. [RSV]

Γυναῖκες Μυροφόροι, τί σπεύδετε λοιπόν, τί δὲ τὰ μύρα τῷ ζῶντι κομίζετε; ἀνέστη καθὼς προεῖπεν ὁ Χριστός, παυσάσθω ὑμῶν τὰ δάκρυα, μετελθόντα εἰς χαράν.

O Myrrh-bearing women, why do you still hurry? Why do you bring spices for the living? Christ has risen as he foretold. Let your tears cease: they have changed to joy. [Lash]

Let us believers praise the Trinity in Unity, glorifying the Father with the Son, and the Spirit consubstantial with the Son, and him who with the Father is without beginning and eternal God. [Lash]

Γαστρὶ ἀγεωργήτως συνέλαβες Ἁγνή, τῆς ἀφθαρσίας τὸν βότρυν ὡς ἄμπελος, ἐξ οὗ τῆς ἀθανασίας οἱ κρουνοί, ὡς οἶνον ἡμῖν πηγάζουσι, τὴν αἰώνιον ζωήν.

Like a vine, pure Maiden, you conceived unhusbanded in your womb the Grape Cluster of incorruption, from which for us the streams of immortality pour out, like wine, eternal life. [Lash]

The noble Joseph taking down your spotless Body from the tree, wrapped it in a clean shroud with sweet spices and laid it for burial in a new grave; but on the third day you arose, O Lord, granting the world your great mercy. [Lash]

Ταῖς Μυροφόροις γυναιξί, παρὰ τὸ μνῆμα ἐπιστάς, ὁ Ἄγγελος ἐβόα· Τὰ μύρα τοῖς θνητοῖς ὑπάρχει ἁρμόδια· Χριστὸς δὲ διαφθορᾶς ἐδείχθη ἀλλότριος· ἀλλὰ κραυγάσατε· Ἀνέστη ὁ Κύριος, παρέχων τῷ κόσμῳ τὸ μέγα ἔλεος.

The Angel standing by the grave cried to the women bearing myrrh, 'Myrrh is fitting for the dead, but Christ has been shown to be a stranger to corruption. But cry aloud: The Lord has risen, granting the world his great mercy!' [Lash]

Τὸ Χαῖρε ταῖς Μυροφόροις φθεγξάμενος, τὸν θρῆνον τῆς προμήτορος Εὔας κατέπαυσας, τῇ Ἀναστάσει σου, Χριστὲ ὁ Θεός, τοῖς Ἀποστόλοις δὲ τοῖς σοῖς κηρύττειν ἐπέταξας, ὁ Σωτὴρ ἐξανέστη τοῦ μνήματος.

When you cried to the Myrrhbearers, 'Rejoice!', Christ our God, you ended the lament of our foremother Eve by your resurrection, while you ordered your Apostles to proclaim, 'The Saviour has risen from the grave'. [Lash]

In those days, Philip went down to a city of Samaria, and proclaimed to them the Christ. And the multitudes with one accord gave heed to what was said by Philip, when they heard him and saw the signs which he did. For unclean spirits came out of many who were possessed, crying with a loud voice; and many who were paralyzed or lame were healed. So there was much joy in the city. But there was a man named Simon who had previously practiced magic in the city and amazed the nation of Samaria, saying that he himself was somebody great. They all gave heed to him, from the least to the greatest, saying, “This man is that power of God which is called Great.” And they gave heed to him, because for a long time he had amazed them with his magic. But when they believed Philip as he preached good news about the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized, both men and women. Even Simon himself believed, and after being baptized he continued with Philip. And seeing signs and great miracles performed, he was amazed. Now when the apostles at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent to them Peter and John, who came down and prayed for them that they might receive the Holy Spirit; for it had not yet fallen on any of them, but they had only been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. Then they laid their hands on them and they received the Holy Spirit. [RSV]

The Lord said to the Jews who came to him, “Do not labor for the food which perishes, but for the food which endures to eternal life, which the Son of man will give to you; for on him has God the Father set his seal.” Then they said to him, “What must we do, to be doing the works of God?” Jesus answered them, “This is the work of God, that you believe in him whom he has sent.” So they said to him, “Then what sign do you do, that we may see, and believe you? What work do you perform? Our fathers ate the manna in the wilderness; as it is written, ‘He gave them bread from heaven to eat.’” Jesus then said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, it was not Moses who gave you the bread from heaven; my Father gives you the true bread from heaven. For the bread of God is that which comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.” [RSV]

   

   

Ὕμνος εἰς τὴν Θεοτόκον.

Hymn to the Theotokos.

Ἄξιόν ἐστιν ὡς ἀληθῶς μακαρίζειν σε τὴν Θεοτόκον, τὴν ἀειμακάριστον καὶ παναμώμητον καὶ μητέρα τοῦ Θεοῦ ἡμῶν. Τὴν τιμιωτέραν τῶν Χερουβεὶμ καὶ ἐνδοξοτέραν ἀσυγκρίτως τῶν Σεραφείμ, τὴν ἀδιαφθόρως Θεὸν Λόγον τεκοῦσαν, τὴν ὄντως Θεοτόκον, σὲ μεγαλύνομεν.

It is truly right to call you blessed, who gave birth to God, ever-blessed and most pure, and Mother of our God. Greater in honour than the Cherubim and beyond compare more glorious than the Seraphim, without corruption you gave birth to God the Word; truly the Mother of God, we magnify you.

Ὁ ἀναστὰς ἐκ νεκρῶν, Χριστὸς ὁ ἀληθινὸς Θεὸς ἡμῶν, ταῖς πρεσβείαις τῆς παναχράντου καὶ παναμώμου ἁγίας αὐτοῦ Μητρός, δυνάμει τοῦ τιμίου καὶ ζωοποιοῦ Σταυροῦ, προστασίαις τῶν τιμίων ἐπουρανίων δυνάμεων ἀσωμάτων, ἱκεσίαις τοῦ τιμίου, ἐνδόξου, προφήτου, προδρόμου καὶ βαπτιστοῦ Ἰωάννου, τῶν ἁγίων ἐνδόξων καὶ πανευφήμων ἀποστόλων, τῶν ἁγίων ἐνδόξων καὶ καλλινίκων μαρτύρων· τῶν ὁσίων καὶ θεοφόρων πατέρων ἡμῶν· (τοῦ ἁγίου τοῦ ναοῦ)· τῶν ἁγίων καὶ δικαίων θεοπατόρων Ἰωακεὶμ καὶ Ἄννης, καὶ πάντων τῶν ἁγίων, ἐλεήσαι καὶ σώσαι ἡμᾶς, ὡς ἀγαθὸς καὶ φιλάνθρωπος καὶ ἐλεήμων Θεός.

May He who rose from the dead, Christ our true God, through the intercessions of His all-pure and all-immaculate holy Mother, the power of the precious and life-giving Cross, the protection of the honorable, bodiless powers of heaven, the supplications of the honorable, glorious prophet and forerunner John the Baptist, of the holy, glorious, and praiseworthy apostles, of the holy, glorious, and triumphant martyrs, of our righteous and God-bearing fathers, (local patron saint); of the holy and righteous ancestors of God Joachim and Anna, and of all the saints, have mercy on us and save us, as He is good, benevolent, and merciful God.
