God is the Lord, and He revealed Himself to us. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. [SAAS]

Στίχ. αʹ. Ἐξομολογεῖσθε τῷ Κυρίῳ καὶ ἐπικαλεῖσθε τὸ ὄνομα τὸ ἅγιον αὐτοῦ.

Verse 1: Give thanks to the Lord and call upon His holy name.

Στίχ. βʹ. Πάντα τὰ ἔθνη ἐκύκλωσάν με, καὶ τῷ ὀνόματι Κυρίου ἠμυνάμην αὐτούς.

Verse 2: All the nations surrounded me, but in the name of the Lord I defended myself against them.

Στίχ. γʹ. Παρὰ Κυρίου ἐγένετο αὕτη καὶ ἔστι θαυμαστὴ ἐν ὀφθαλμοῖς ἡμῶν.

Τὸν συνάναρχον Λόγον.

Τὸν συνάναρχον Λόγον Πατρὶ καὶ Πνεύματι, τὸν ἐκ Παρθένου τεχθέντα εἰς σωτηρίαν ἡμῶν, ἀνυμνήσωμεν πιστοὶ καὶ προσκυνήσωμεν· ὅτι ηὐδόκησε σαρκί, ἀνελθεῖν ἐν τῷ Σταυρῷ, καὶ θάνατον ὑπομεῖναι, καὶ ἐγεῖραι τοὺς τεθνεῶτας, ἐν τῇ ἐνδόξῳ ἀναστάσει αὐτοῦ.

Let us believers praise and worship the Word who like the Father and the Spirit is without beginning, born from a Virgin for our salvation; for he was well-pleased to ascend the Cross in the flesh and undergo death, and to raise those who had died, by his glorious Resurrection. [Lash]

Τῆς ἐνθέου ἀγάπης τὸ πῦρ δεξάμενος, * ὑπερβαλλούσῃ ἀσκήσει ἐδόθης ὅλος Θεῷ * καὶ παράκλησις πολλῶν ἀνθρώπων γέγονας, * λόγοις θείοις νουθετῶν, προσευχαῖς θαυματουργῶν, Παΐσιε θεοφόρε· * καὶ νῦν πρεσβεύεις ἀπαύστως ὑπὲρ παντὸς τοῦ κόσμου, Ὅσιε.

Once the fire of love for the Lord was lit in you, * through ascetical rigor you gave yourself to God. * O God-bearing St. Paisios, for many you became * consolation, giving counsel with God-inspired words, * and by your prayers working wonders. * And now, devout one, you intercede for the whole world unceasingly. Χαῖρε πύλη Κυρίου ἡ ἀδιόδευτος· Χαῖρε τεῖχος καὶ σκέπη τῶν προστρεχόντων εἰς σέ· Χαῖρε ἀχείμαστε λιμήν, καὶ ἀπειρόγαμε· ἡ τεκοῦσα ἐν σαρκὶ τὸν ποιητήν σου καὶ Θεόν, πρεσβεύουσα μὴ ἐλλείπῃς, ὑπὲρ τῶν ἀνυμνούντων, καὶ προσκυνούντων τὸν τόκον σου.

Hail gate of the Lord, though which none may pass; hail wall and protection of those who flee to you; hail haven without storms, and who did not know wedlock, who bore in the flesh your Maker and God, do not cease to intercede for those who praise and worship your Offspring. [Lash]

Ἀναγινώσκεται τὸ οἰκεῖον Κάθισμα τοῦ Ψαλτηρίου, ἤτοι Κάθισμα 2. Μεθʼ ὃ ἡ μικρὰ Συναπτή.

The appointed Kathisma of the Psalter may be read, i.e. Kathisma 2. Then the short litany.

Commemorating our all-holy, pure, most blessed and glorious Lady, Mother of God and Ever-Virgin Mary, with all the Saints, let us entrust ourselves and one another and our whole life to Christ our God.

Τὸν Σταυρὸν τοῦ Κυρίου ἐγκωμιάσωμεν, τὴν ταφὴν τὴν ἁγίαν ὕμνοις τιμήσωμεν, καὶ τὴν ἀνάστασιν αὐτοῦ ὑπερδοξάσωμεν· ὅτι συνήγειρε νεκρούς, ἐκ τῶν μνημάτων ὡς Θεός, σκυλεύσας κράτος θανάτου, καὶ ἰσχὺν διαβόλου, καὶ τοῖς ἐν ᾅδῃ φῶς ἀνέτειλε.

Let us celebrate the Cross of the Lord, let us honour in hymns his holy Burial and highly glorify his Resurrection; for with himself he raised the dead from the graves, as God having despoiled the might of death and the devil’s strength, and he made light dawn for those in Hell. [Lash]

O Lord, who put death to death, you were called dead; you that emptied the tombs were placed in a tomb; above, soldiers were guarding the grave, below, you raised the dead from every age. O Lord, All-powerful and beyond all understanding, glory to you! [Lash]

Hail holy mountain on which God has walked; hail living bush and unconsumed by fire; hail the world’s only bridge to God, who lead mortals over to eternal life; hail Maiden undefiled, who bore without wedlock the salvation of our souls. [Lash]

O Lord, after your Resurrection on the third day, and the worship of the Apostles, Peter cried to you: Women had courage, and I was a coward; a Thief confessed you as God, and I denied you: will you call me disciple in future, or will you declare me once again a fisher of the deep? But accept me repenting, O God, and save me! [Lash]

O Lord, the lawless nailed you between malefactors and pierced your side with a lance, O Merciful; but you, who destroyed the gates of Hell, accepted burial and rose on the third day; Women ran to see you and they announced the Resurrection to the Apostles. O Saviour highly exalted, whom the Angels hymn, O blessed Lord, glory to you. [Lash]

Blessed are You, O Lord, teach me Your statutes.

Τῶν Ἀγγέλων ὁ δῆμος, κατεπλάγη ὁρῶν σε, ἐν νεκροῖς λογισθέντα, τοῦ θανάτου δὲ Σωτήρ, τὴν ἰσχὺν καθελόντα, καὶ σὺν ἑαυτῷ τὸν Ἀδὰμ ἐγείραντα, καὶ ἐξ ᾍδου πάντας ἐλευθερώσαντα.

When the hosts of the Angels saw how You were accounted among the dead, they all marveled. You, O Savior, are the One who destroyed the might of death; and when You arose You raised Adam with yourself and from Hades liberated everyone. [SD]

“Why do you mingle the ointments with your tears full of pity, O women disciples?” Thus the Angel who was shining in the tomb cried to the myrrh-bearing women. “See for yourselves the empty tomb and understand, that the Savior has risen from the sepulcher.”

Λίαν πρωΐ, Μυροφόροι ἔδραμον, πρὸς τὸ μνῆμά σου θρηνολογοῦσαι· ἀλλʼ ἐπέστη, πρὸς αὐτὰς ὁ Ἄγγελος, καὶ εἶπε· θρήνου ὁ καιρὸς πέπαυται, μὴ κλαίετε, τὴν Ἀνάστασιν δέ, Ἀποστόλοις εἴπατε.

Very early in the morning, the myrrh-bearing women were hastening to Your tomb lamenting. But the Angel appeared to them and uttered, “The time for lamentation has ended; weep no more. Go announce the Resurrection to the Apostles.”

Blessed are You, O Lord, teach me Your statutes.

Μυροφόροι γυναῖκες, μετὰ μύρων ἐλθοῦσαι, πρὸς τὸ μνῆμά σου, Σῶτερ ἐνηχοῦντο. Ἀγγέλου τρανῶς, πρὸς αὐτὰς φθεγγομένου· Τί μετὰ νεκρῶν, τὸν ζώντα λογίζεσθε; ὡς Θεὸς γάρ, ἐξανέστη τοῦ μνήματος.

When the myrrh-bearing women had come with their spices to Your sepulcher, O Savior, they heard the voice of an Angel clearly speaking to them, “Why do you account among the dead the One who lives? For as God, He has risen from the sepulcher.”

Προσκυνοῦμεν Πατέρα, καὶ τὸν τούτου Υἱόν τε, καὶ τὸ Ἅγιον Πνεῦμα, τὴν Ἁγίαν Τριάδα, ἐν μιᾷ τῇ οὐσίᾳ, σὺν τοῖς Σεραφείμ, κράζοντες τό· Ἅγιος, Ἅγιος, Ἅγιος εἶ, Κύριε.

We bow down in worship to the Father and His Son and the Holy Spirit, the Holy Trinity, one in essence; and we cry aloud with the Seraphim: Holy, Holy, Holy are You, O Lord.

Ζωοδότην τεκοῦσα, ἐλυτρώσω Παρθένε, τὸν Ἀδὰμ ἁμαρτίας, χαρμονὴν δὲ τῇ Εὔᾳ, ἀντὶ λύπης παρέσχες, ῥεύσαντα ζωῆς, ἴθυνε πρὸς ταύτην δέ, ὁ ἐκ σοῦ σαρκωθείς Θεὸς καὶ ἄνθρωπος.

Giving birth to the Giver of life, O Virgin, you delivered Adam from sin, and to Eve you have rendered joy in place of sorrow. He who from you became incarnate, God and man, has directed to life him who fell from it.

O Lord, You shall open my lips, and my mouth will declare Your praise.

For if You desired sacrifice, I would give it; You will not be pleased with whole burnt offerings.

A sacrifice to God is a broken spirit, a broken and humbled heart God will not despise.

Do good, O Lord, in Your good pleasure to Zion, and let the walls of Jerusalem be built.

Paisios lived alone for God alone;

The godlike Children did not worship creation instead of the Creator, but bravely trampling on the threat of fire, rejoicing they sang: O highly exalted Lord and God of our fathers, blessed are you! [Lash]

The Youths in the furnace, weaving a dance of all creation, sang to you the Maker of all: All you works praise the Lord, and highly exalt him to all the ages. [Lash]

As if it was not willed, you prayed that the wished for cup of your saving Passion might pass; for you bear two wills, O Christ, corresponding to your two natures to the ages. [Lash]

At your descent, O Christ, the Maker of all, Hell became a laughing stock and disgorged all those who of old had been slain by the devil’s deception and who highly exalt you to all the ages. [Lash]

Being rich in the grace of cures and healings, * from severe illnesses you relieved many people. * But you, O Saint, courageously endured your own * incurable disease, for the sake of love, to suffer along with those who suffered. [SD]

When your illness was wearing down your body * you, O Saint, persevered in your ascetic practice, * as if you had no body, O stout-hearted man, * and you could hear the Angels extol God and sing to Him: Holy, Holy, Holy. [SD]

Ἀποθέμενοι ἅπαν τὸ φορτίον * τῶν τοῦ βίου δεινῶν τῷ τάφῳ σου, Παμμάκαρ, * ἰσχύν, χαράν, ἐλπίδα κομιζόμεθα * καὶ τῶν ἀνιάτων δεινῶν τε νοσημάτων ἰάματα ἀντλοῦμεν.

When we come to your grave, all-blessed Father, * we unload all of life’s insufferable burdens, * and we find hope and joy and strength to carry on, * and obtain the cures for incurable diseases and serious conditions. [SD]

We praise and we bless and we worship the Lord.

Παῖδας εὐαγεῖς ἐν τῇ καμίνῳ, ὁ τόκος τῆς Θεοτόκου διεσώσατο, τότε μὲν τυπούμενος, νῦν δὲ ἐνεργούμενος, τὴν οἰκουμένην ἅπασαν, ἀγείρει ψάλλουσαν. Τὸν Κύριον ὑμνεῖτε τὰ ἔργα, καὶ ὑπερυψοῦτε, εἰς πάντας τοὺς αἰῶνας.

The Offspring of the Mother of God saved the innocent Youths in the furnace. Then he was prefigured, but now in reality he gathers the whole world which sings: All you works praise the Lord, and highly exalt him to all the ages. [Lash]

You wove an all-white garment to dress your soul, * through your endless ascetic endeavors and unceasing prayer. * Thus arrayed, you entered the wedding hall, * which is suffused with light divine, * where the sacred chorus of all devout * ascetic saints received you. * And heading that reception * with utmost joy was St. Arsenios. Ἅπας γηγενής, σκιρτάτω τῷ πνεύματι λαμπαδουχούμενος, πανηγυριζέτω δέ, ἀΰλων Νόων φύσις γεραίρουσα, τὰ ἱερὰ θαυμάσια τῆς Θεομήτορος, καὶ βοάτω· Χαίροις παμμακάριστε, Θεοτόκε Ἁγνὴ ἀειπάρθενε.

Let all born of earth bearing torches, in spirit leap for joy; let the nature of the immaterial spirits honour and celebrate the wondrous sacred festival of the Mother of God, and let them cry: Hail, all-blessed Mother of God, pure and Ever-Virgin! [Lash]

Δεικνύων ὅτι ἄνθρωπος, Σῶτερ εἶ κατʼ οὐσίαν, ἀναστὰς ἐκ τοῦ μνήματος, βρώσεως συμμετέσχες, καὶ μέσον στὰς ἐδίδασκες, μετάνοιαν κηρύσσειν· εὐθὺς δὲ πρὸς οὐράνιον, ἀνελήφθης Πατέρα, καὶ Μαθηταῖς, πέμπειν τὸν Παράκλητον ἐπηγγείλω. Ὑπέρθεε, Θεάνθρωπε, δόξα τῇ σῇ ἐγέρσει.

Demonstrating that You are man * essentially, O Savior, * after Your rising from the grave, * in the midst You did stand and partake of food, and You taught them * baptism of repentance. * You, being forthwith taken up * to the heavenly Father, promised to send * the Paraclete Spirit to Your disciples. * O God, beyond divine, and man, * glory to Your arising. Συναθροισθέντες σήμερον * τῇ ἁγίᾳ σου μνήμῃ * ἐν τῷ ναῷ σου, Ὅσιε, * καὶ κύκλῳ τοῦ σοῦ τάφου, * ἐν εὐλαβείᾳ βοῶμεν· * Ὦ Παΐσιε πάτερ, * καὶ τάφῳ καλυπτόμενος, * ἀοράτως ὑπάρχεις μέσον ἡμῶν, * ὅθεν δέξαι πάντων τὰς ἱκεσίας * καὶ δώρησαι πρεσβείαις σου * πᾶσι τὴν σωτηρίαν.

For this your holy memory * we have today assembled * here in your church and round about * your sacred grave, devout Saint * Paisios, and with reverence * we say to you, O Father: * Even concealed within the grave, * nonetheless you are with us invisibly. * So accept the prayers of all in attendance, * and grant salvation to us all, * by your strong intercessions. For He spoke, and they were made; He commanded, and they were created.

He established them forever and unto ages of ages; He set forth His ordinance, and it shall not pass away.

Praise the Lord from the earth, you dragons and all the deeps.

Πῦρ, χάλαζα, χιών, κρύσταλλος, πνεῦμα καταιγίδος, τὰ ποιοῦντα τὸν λόγον αὐτοῦ.

Fire and hail, snow and ice, stormy wind, which perform His word.

Τὰ ὄρη καὶ πάντες οἱ βουνοί, ξύλα καρποφόρα καὶ πᾶσαι κέδροι.

Mountains and all the hills, fruitful trees and all cedars.

Τὰ θηρία καὶ πάντα τὰ κτήνη, ἑρπετὰ καὶ πετεινὰ πτερωτά.

Wild animals and all cattle, creeping things and flying birds.

Βασιλεῖς τῆς γῆς καὶ πάντες λαοί, ἄρχοντες καὶ πάντες κριταὶ γῆς.

Kings of the earth and all peoples, princes and all judges of the earth.

Νεανίσκοι καὶ παρθένοι, πρεσβύτεροι μετὰ νεωτέρων· αἰνεσάτωσαν τὸ ὄνομα Κυρίου, ὅτι ὑψώθη τὸ ὄνομα αὐτοῦ μόνου.

Young men and maidens, elders with younger, let them praise the Lord’s name, for His name alone is exalted.

Ἡ ἐξομολόγησις αὐτοῦ ἐπὶ γῆς καὶ οὐρανοῦ. καὶ ὑψώσει κέρας λαοῦ αὐτοῦ.

His thanksgiving is in earth and heaven. And He shall exalt the horn of His people.

Ὕμνος πᾶσι τοῖς ὁσίοις αὐτοῦ, τοῖς υἱοῖς Ἰσραήλ, λαῷ ἐγγίζοντι αὐτῷ.

A hymn for all His saints, for the children of Israel, a people who draw near to Him.

Ἄσατε τῷ Κυρίῳ ᾆσμα καινόν, ἡ αἴνεσις αὐτοῦ ἐν ἐκκλησίᾳ ὁσίων.

Sing to the Lord a new song, His praise in the assembly of His holy ones.

Εὐφρανθήτω Ἰσραὴλ ἐπὶ τῷ ποιήσαντι αὐτόν, καὶ οἱ υἱοὶ Σιὼν ἀγαλλιάσθωσαν ἐπὶ τῷ βασιλεῖ αὐτῶν.

Let Israel be glad in Him who made him, and let the children of Zion greatly rejoice in their King.

Αἰνεσάτωσαν τὸ ὄνομα αὐτοῦ ἐν χορῷ, ἐν τυμπάνῳ καὶ ψαλτηρίῳ ψαλάτωσαν αὐτῷ.

Let them praise His name with dance; with tambourine and harp let them sing to Him.

Ὅτι εὐδοκεῖ Κύριος ἐν τῷ λαῷ αὐτοῦ καὶ ὑψώσει πραεῖς ἐν σωτηρίᾳ.

For the Lord is pleased with His people, and He shall exalt the gentle with salvation.

Καυχήσονται ὅσιοι ἐν δόξῃ καὶ ἀγαλλιάσονται ἐπὶ τῶν κοιτῶν αὐτῶν.

The holy ones shall boast in glory, and they shall greatly rejoice on their beds.

Αἱ ὑψώσεις τοῦ Θεοῦ ἐν τῷ λάρυγγι αὐτῶν, καὶ ῥομφαῖαι δίστομοι ἐν ταῖς χερσὶν αὐτῶν.

The high praise of God shall be in their mouth and a two-edged sword in their hand.

Τοῦ ποιῆσαι ἐκδίκησιν ἐν τοῖς ἔθνεσιν, ἐλεγμοὺς ἐν τοῖς λαοῖς.

To deal retribution to the nations, reproving among the peoples.

Τοῦ δῆσαι τοὺς βασιλεῖς αὐτῶν ἐν πέδαις καὶ τοὺς ἐνδόξους αὐτῶν ἐν χειροπέδαις σιδηραῖς.

To shackle their kings with chains and their nobles with fetters of iron.

Devout father, you adorned your soul * with such ornaments of grace, O St. Paisios, for you had a zeal that burnt like fire, * like that of Elijah; * you had Daniel’s acumen, * the mind-set of the brave brothers Maccabee, the ardent love for God * of Ignatius, and especially * the immense love that Paul the Apostle had. O Christ, You the true peace of God with humanity, when You gave Your peace to the Disciples after the resurrection, You frightened them; for they thought that they were seeing a ghost. But You quieted the agitation of their souls by showing them Your hands and Your feet. And while they still did not believe it, You partook of the food and reminded them of the teachings, and thus You opened their minds to understand the Scriptures. Then, when You affirmed the promise of the Father, and You blessed them, You departed for heaven. We therefore join them in worshipping You. Glory to You, O Lord. [SD]

You are supremely blessed, O Virgin Theotokos. For through Him who from you became incarnate was Hades taken prisoner, and Adam has been summoned back; the curse has been neutralized, and Eve has been liberated; death has been put to death, and we have been brought to life. Therefore extolling we cry out: O Christ our God, You are blessed, for so was Your good pleasure. Glory to You! [SD]

Great Doxology

Δόξα σοι τῷ δείξαντι τὸ φῶς. Δόξα ἐν ὑψίστοις Θεῷ καὶ ἐπὶ γῆς εἰρήνη, ἐν ἀνθρώποις εὐδοκία.

Glory to you who have shown us the light. Glory in the highest to God. His peace is on earth, His good pleasure in mankind. [Lash]

Ὑμνοῦμέν σε, εὐλογοῦμέν σε, προσκυνοῦμέν σε, δοξολογοῦμέν σε, εὐχαριστοῦμέν σοι, διὰ τὴν μεγάλην σου δόξαν.
