When I ponder Markella’s battles and bouts, * then my mind stops in utter astonishment * at how being female, yet * by the grace of the Lord Christ * the Creator of nature, she prevailed and bravely behaved * like a man and defeated Satan’s wanton audacity. * Therefore let us all extol her triumph together * and faithfully shout to her: * Maiden Martyr victorious * who are lauded in all the world, * intercede with Christ our God * that remission of offenses be bestowed * upon those who with longing * keep your holy memory.

O all-holy and virgin Mother of God, * heal the difficult passions that plague my soul, * I fervently pray to you, * and to me grant forgiveness of * the offenses I mindlessly committed and thus defiled both my soul and my body, miserable that I am. * Woe is me the wretch! What shall I do in that hour * precisely when angels will * come in order to part my soul, * from my miserable body? * Then, O Sovereign Lady, be for me * my most earnest helper and my patroness. * For I your worthless servant * have you as my only hope. 10:16 – 22

The Lord said to his disciples, “Behold, I send you out as sheep in the midst of wolves; so be wise as serpents and innocent as doves. Beware of men; for they will deliver you up to councils, and flog you in their synagogues, and you will be dragged before governors and kings for my sake, to bear testimony before them and the Gentiles. When they deliver you up, do not be anxious how you are to speak or what you are to say; for what you are to say will be given to you in that hour; for it is not you who speak, but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you. Brother will deliver up brother to death, and the father his child, and children will rise against parents and have them put to death; and you will be hated by all for my name’s sake. But he who endures to the end will be saved.” [RSV]

Psalm 50 (51).

Have mercy on me, O God, according to Your great mercy; and according to the abundance of Your compassion, blot out my transgression. Wash me thoroughly from my lawlessness and cleanse me from my sin. For I know my lawlessness, and my sin is always before me. Against You only have I sinned and done evil in Your sight; that You may be justified in Your words, and overcome when You are judged. For behold, I was conceived in transgressions, and in sins my mother bore me. Behold, You love truth; You showed me the unknown and secret things of Your wisdom. You shall sprinkle me with hyssop, and I will be cleansed; You shall wash me, and I will be made whiter than snow. You shall make me hear joy and gladness; my bones that were humbled shall greatly rejoice. Turn Your face from my sins, and blot out all my transgressions. Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me. Do not cast me away from Your presence, and do not take Your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of Your salvation, and uphold me with Your guiding Spirit. I will teach transgressors Your ways, and the ungodly shall turn back to You. Deliver me from bloodguiltiness, O God, the God of my salvation, and my tongue shall greatly rejoice in Your righteousness. O Lord, You shall open my lips, and my mouth will declare Your praise. For if You desired sacrifice, I would give it; You will not be pleased with whole burnt offerings. A sacrifice to God is a broken spirit, a broken and humbled heart God will not despise. Do good, O Lord, in Your good pleasure to Zion, and let the walls of Jerusalem be built; then You will be pleased with a sacrifice of righteousness, with offerings and whole burnt offerings; then shall they offer young bulls on Your altar. Verse: Have mercy on me, O God, according to Your great mercy; and according to the abundance of Your compassion, blot out my transgression. [SAAS]

Mary Magdalen, having as his disciple faithfully served Christ our God, who willingly made himself poor with my poverty in his surpassing compassion, when she saw him stretched on a Cross and shut up in a tomb, weeping cried out, 'What is this strange sight? How is he who gives life to the dead numbered among the dead? What sweet spices can I bring the one who freed me from the foul stench of the demons? What tears can I shed for the one who stripped my foremother of her tears?' But the Sovereign of the universe, appearing like the guardian of Paradise, by the dew of his words banished the heat and said to her, 'Go to my brethren and shout aloud the good tidings of joy: I am ascending to my Father and your Father, and my God and your God, that I may grant the world my great mercy.' The Word, who had made himself poor in his surpassing compassion, Mary Magdalen truly served as a disciple; but when she saw him hanging on a Cross and laid in a tomb she wept and lamented. Therefore we honour you and celebrate your festival in faith, revered Myrrhbearer, and with one accord we cry out to you: Intercede with Christ God to grant forgiveness of offences to those who celebrate with love your holy memory.

Let us sing in honor of the four-stringed lyre of Christ-loving Chios, O congregation fond of feasts: Isidore the martyr-athlete, and his fellow martyr Myropi, and Matrona the most holy monastic, with Markella the virgin-martyr whose divine memory we observe today. On fire with divine longing, the celebrated maid resisted the rebel, as if she were bodiless, and most wisely she undid his machinations, as if they were spider webs. For manfully she accepted to be slaughtered by her licentious father, not sparing even her life, for Christ her Bridegroom. Therefore she was counted worthy to become a patroness of her homeland, together with the other saints who flourished there, with whom she intercedes with the Lord, on behalf of our souls. [SD]
