In Your kingdom. Remember us, O Lord, when You come in Your kingdom. Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven [RSV]

Μακάριοι οἱ πενθοῦντες, ὅτι αὐτοὶ παρακληθήσονται.

Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted. [RSV]

Μακάριοι οἱ πρᾳεῖς, ὅτι αὐτοὶ κληρονομήσουσι τὴν γῆν.

Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth. [RSV]

Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God. [RSV]

Διὰ ξύλου ὁ Ἀδάμ, Παραδείσου γέγονεν ἄποικος, διὰ ξύλου δὲ Σταυροῦ, ὁ Λῃστὴς Παράδεισον ᾤκησεν· ὁ μὲν γὰρ γευσάμενος, ἐντολὴν ἠθέτησε τοῦ ποιήσαντος, ὁ δὲ συσταυρούμενος, Θεὸν ὡμολόγησε τὸν κρυπτόμενον. Μνήσθητί μου βοῶν, ἐν τῇ Βασιλείᾳ σου.

Through a tree Adam became an exile from Paradise; but through the tree of the Cross the Thief made his home in Paradise, for the former through tasting set aside his Maker’s commandment, while the latter, crucified with him, confessed the hidden God, as he cried, 'Remember me in your kingdom'. Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. [RSV]

Προσηλώθης τῷ Σταυρῷ, διὰ πολλὴν Χριστὲ ἀγαθότητα, ἐκεντήθης τὴν πλευράν, δύο κρουνοὺς πηγάσας ἀφέσεως, ἡ γῆ δὲ μὴ φέρουσα, καθορᾷν τὸ τόλμημα ἐκυμαίνετο, αἱ πέτραι ἐῤῥήγνυντο, ἐσβέννυτο ἥλιος, ἐσαλεύοντο ὄρη, καὶ οἱ βουνοὶ φόβῳ τοῦ κράτους σου.

Through your great loving kindness, O Christ, you were nailed to the Cross; you were pierced in the side and became the source of two springs of forgiveness, while the earth, unable to bear watching the shameless deed, heaved and quaked, the rocks were rent, the sun was quenched, mountains and hills were shaken with fear of your might. [Lash]

Μακάριοι ἐστὲ ὅταν ὀνειδίσωσιν ὑμᾶς, καὶ διώξωσι, καὶ εἴπωσι πᾶν πονηρὸν ῥῆμα καθʼ ὑμῶν, ψευδόμενοι ἕνεκεν ἐμοῦ.

Blessed are you when men revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely [for my sake]. [RSV]

Τῆς ταθείσης ἀκρατῶς, χειρὸς ἐν ξύλῳ πάλαι τῆς γνώσεως, τοῦ προπάτορος Ἀδάμ, ἐπανορθῶν Χριστὲ τὸ ὀλίσθημα, ἐτάθης θελήματι, καὶ τὰς σὰς ἡλώθης χεῖρας Μακρόθυμε, ὁ πλάσας τὸν ἄνθρωπον, χειρί σου διʼ ἄμετρον ἀγαθότητα. Δόξα τῇ ὑπὲρ νοῦν Λόγε εὐσπλαγχνίᾳ σου.

Of old the hand of the Forefather Adam had been stretched out intemperately to the tree of knowledge. To right his fall, O Christ, you were stretched out by your own will and you were nailed by your hands, O Long suffering who fashioned mankind with your hand through your infinite loving kindness. Glory, O Word, to your compassion beyond understanding. [Lash]

Χαίρετε καὶ ἀγαλλιᾶσθε, ὅτι ὁ μισθὸς ὑμῶν πολὺς ἐν τοῖς οὐρανοῖς.

Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven. [RSV]

Οὐρανώσαντες τὴν γῆν, ταῖς ὑπερτάταις Ἅγιοι λάμψεσι, τῶν ἀγώνων τῶν καλῶν, διʼ ὧν τὸ σκότος ἄπαν ἐδύσατε, τὸ τῆς ματαιότητος, καὶ πρὸς φῶς τὸ ἄδυτον ἐσκηνώσατε, μεθέξει θεούμενοι, καὶ πᾶσιν αὐγάζοντες φέγγος γνώσεως, τοῖς κατὰ χρέος ὑμᾶς μακαρίζουσι.

Making the earth a heaven, Holy Martyrs, by the surpassing splendours of your contests, through them you dispelled all the darkness of vain folly and you came to dwell with the unsetting light, made divine by participation, and you pour the brilliance of the light of knowledge on all who fittingly call you blessed. [Lash]

Worship, glory and honour let us bring to the Trinity, cause of all, offering with thrice-holy words the hymn of the Angels. To the Father without beginning, to the Son and Spirit we sing aloud and cry out the word of the good Thief: Remember us also in your Kingdom. [Lash]

Ἀναρτώμενον Σταυρῷ, ἐθελουσίως βλέπουσα Ἄχραντε, τὸν Υἱόν σου καὶ Θεόν, ἐκπληττομένη κλαίουσα ἔλεγες· Ποῦ ἔδυ τὸ κάλλος σου, τοῦ τὰ πάντα Κύριε καλλωπίσαντος; τί ταῦτα ἀχάριστος, ἀπέδωκε δῆμός σοι ἀντὶ ἀγαθῶν; Δόξα Λόγε τῇ σῇ ἄκρᾳ ἀγαθότητι.

When you saw your Son and God willingly hanged on a cross, O Most Pure, you were amazed and weeping you said: How has your beauty set, O Lord, who made the universe beautiful? Why has an ungrateful people repaid you like this for your blessings? Glory, O Word, to your supreme loving kindness. [Lash]

Ὁ Μάρτυς σου Κύριε, ἐν τῇ ἀθλήσει αὐτοῦ, τὸ στέφος ἐκομίσατο τῆς ἀφθαρσίας, ἐκ σοῦ τοῦ Θεοῦ ἡμῶν· ἔχων γὰρ τὴν ἰσχύν σου, τοὺς τυράννους καθεῖλεν· ἔθραυσε καὶ δαιμόνων, τὰ ἀνίσχυρα θράση. Αὐτοῦ ταῖς ἱκεσίαις, Χριστὲ ὁ Θεός, σῶσον τὰς ψυχὰς ἡμῶν.

Your Martyr, O Lord, by his struggle obtained the crown of incorruption from you, our God; for with your might he destroyed tyrants, and shattered the feeble insolence of the demons: at his prayers, Christ our God, save our souls. [Lash]

Κανόνα πίστεως καὶ εἰκόνα πραότητος, ἐγκρατείας διδάσκαλον, ἀνέδειξέ σε τῇ ποίμνῃ σου, ἡ τῶν πραγμάτων ἀλήθεια· διὰ τοῦτο ἐκτήσω τῇ ταπεινώσει τὰ ὑψηλά, τῇ πτωχείᾳ τὰ πλούσια, Πάτερ Ἰωάννη Ὅσιε· πρέσβευε Χριστῷ τῷ Θεῷ, σωθῆναι τὰς ψυχὰς ἡμῶν.

A rule of faith are you, and an icon of gentleness, and a teacher of self-control. And to your flock this was evident, by the truth of your life and deeds. You were humble and therefore you acquired exalted gifts, treasure in heaven for being poor. Holy and devout Father John, intercede with Christ our God, and entreat Him to save our souls. [SD]

Lifted up on the Cross of your own will, grant your mercies, O Christ God, to the new commonwealth that bears your name. Brethren, we know that in everything God works for good with those who love him, who are called according to his purpose. And those whom he predestined he also called; and those whom he called he also justified; and those whom he justified he also glorified. What then shall we say to this? If God is for us, who is against us? He who did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all, will he not also give us all things with him? Who shall bring any charge against God’s elect? It is God who justifies; who is to condemn? Is it Christ Jesus, who died, yes, who was raised from the dead, who is at the right hand of God, who indeed intercedes for us? Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? As it is written, “For your sake we are being killed all the day long; we are regarded as sheep to be slaughtered.” No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am sure that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord. The Lord said to his disciples, “Let us go across to the other side.” And leaving the crowd, they took him with them in the boat, just as he was. And other boats were with him. And a great storm of wind arose, and the waves beat into the boat, so that the boat was already filling. But he was in the stern, asleep on the cushion; and they woke him and said to him, “Teacher, do you not care if we perish?” And he awoke and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, “Peace! Be still!” And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm. He said to them, “Why are you afraid? Have you no faith?” And they were filled with awe, and said to one another, “Who then is this, that even wind and sea obey him?” [RSV]

Hymn to the Theotokos.

Ἄξιόν ἐστιν ὡς ἀληθῶς μακαρίζειν σε τὴν Θεοτόκον, τὴν ἀειμακάριστον καὶ παναμώμητον καὶ μητέρα τοῦ Θεοῦ ἡμῶν. Τὴν τιμιωτέραν τῶν Χερουβεὶμ καὶ ἐνδοξοτέραν ἀσυγκρίτως τῶν Σεραφείμ, τὴν ἀδιαφθόρως Θεὸν Λόγον τεκοῦσαν, τὴν ὄντως Θεοτόκον, σὲ μεγαλύνομεν.

It is truly right to call you blessed, who gave birth to God, ever-blessed and most pure, and Mother of our God. Greater in honour than the Cherubim and beyond compare more glorious than the Seraphim, without corruption you gave birth to God the Word; truly the Mother of God, we magnify you.

Εἴδομεν τὸ φῶς τὸ ἀληθινόν, ἐλάβομεν Πνεῦμα ἐπουράνιον, εὕρομεν πίστιν ἀληθῆ, ἀδιαίρετον Τριάδα προσκυνοῦντες· αὕτη γὰρ ἡμᾶς ἔσωσεν.

We have seen the true light; we have received the heavenly Spirit; we have found the true faith, worshiping the undivided Trinity, for the Trinity has saved us.

Χριστὸς ὁ ἀληθινὸς Θεὸς ἡμῶν, ταῖς πρεσβείαις τῆς παναχράντου καὶ παναμώμου ἁγίας αὐτοῦ Μητρός, δυνάμει τοῦ τιμίου καὶ ζωοποιοῦ Σταυροῦ, προστασίαις τῶν τιμίων ἐπουρανίων δυνάμεων ἀσωμάτων, ἱκεσίαις τοῦ τιμίου, ἐνδόξου, προφήτου, προδρόμου καὶ βαπτιστοῦ Ἰωάννου, τῶν ἁγίων ἐνδόξων καὶ πανευφήμων ἀποστόλων, τῶν ἁγίων ἐνδόξων καὶ καλλινίκων μαρτύρων· τῶν ὁσίων καὶ θεοφόρων πατέρων ἡμῶν· (τοῦ ἁγίου τοῦ ναοῦ)· τῶν ἁγίων καὶ δικαίων θεοπατόρων Ἰωακεὶμ καὶ Ἄννης, καὶ τοῦ Ἁγίου Μάρτυρος Μάμαντος, οὗ καὶ τὴν μνήμην ἐπιτελοῦμεν· καὶ πάντων τῶν ἁγίων, ἐλεήσαι καὶ σώσαι ἡμᾶς, ὡς ἀγαθὸς καὶ φιλάνθρωπος καὶ ἐλεήμων Θεός.

May Christ our true God, through the intercessions of His all-pure and all-immaculate holy Mother, the power of the precious and life-giving Cross, the protection of the honorable, bodiless powers of heaven, the supplications of the honorable, glorious prophet and forerunner John the Baptist, of the holy, glorious, and praiseworthy apostles, of the holy, glorious, and triumphant martyrs, of our righteous and God-bearing fathers, (local patron saint); of the holy and righteous ancestors of God Joachim and Anna, and the holy Martyr Mamas, whose memory we are observing, and of all the saints, have mercy on us and save us, as He is good, benevolent, and merciful God.
