Life was laid in the sepulcher, and a seal was laid on the stone. And as if guarding a king in his sleep, so the soldiers guarded Christ; and Angels glorified Him as the immortal God. The women cried aloud, "The Lord has risen, and granted the world great mercy." [SD]

When the hosts of the Angels saw how You were accounted among the dead, they all marveled. You, O Savior, are the One who destroyed the might of death; and when You arose You raised Adam with yourself and from Hades liberated everyone. [SD]

“Why do you mingle the ointments with your tears full of pity, O women disciples?” Thus the Angel who was shining in the tomb cried to the myrrh-bearing women. “See for yourselves the empty tomb and understand, that the Savior has risen from the sepulcher.”

Very early in the morning, the myrrh-bearing women were hastening to Your tomb lamenting. But the Angel appeared to them and uttered, “The time for lamentation has ended; weep no more. Go announce the Resurrection to the Apostles.”

The netherworld below was trembling today -- Hades and Death before One of the Trinity. The earth was convulsing; and the wardens of hell, seeing You, cowered in fear, yet creation all, rejoicing with the Prophets, sings an ode of triumph to You, our Redeemer and God, who now has destroyed the power of Death. To Adam and to those who were born of him let us shout in triumph and cry aloud, "A Tree has brought this man back in. Come out, you faithful, to the Resurrection." [SD]

Katavasias of the Cross

ᾨδὴ αʹ. δʹ.

Ode i. Mode pl. 4.

When Moses inscribed a cross * with his rod extended, * he split the Red Sea for the host * of Israel that went on foot. * Then crosswise he once again * struck it and united it on Pharaoh's chariots, * portraying on its surface the invincible weapon. * Therefore to Christ our God * let us all sing, for He has been glorified. [SD]

ᾨδὴ γʹ.

Ode iii.

The rod is taken to be an archetype of the mystery; * for it blossomed and thus chose the priest from others. * And now the tree of the Cross, unto the formerly barren Church, * has blossomed forth, * as power and a firm support. [SD]

ᾨδὴ δʹ.

Ode iv.

I have heard the report, O Lord, * of Your dispensation's amazing mystery. * I considered well Your mighty works; * wherefore Your divinity I glorified. [SD]

ᾨδὴ εʹ.

Ode v.

O tree, you are three times blessed. * For Christ our King and our Lord was hung outstretched on you of old. * Through you fallen is the Devil who deceived man * by a tree, for he himself was snared by God who was crucified * in the flesh to you, and who grants unto our souls His peace. [SD]

ᾨδὴ Ϛʹ.

Ode vi.

When Jonah was in the belly * of the sea beast, and his hands in a cruciform were stretched out, * he thus clearly prefigured the saving Passion of Christ. * Whence after three days he emerged, depicting thus the super-mundane Resurrection from the dead * of our God who was physically nailed to the Cross * and by His third-day arising illumined the universe. [SD]

ᾨδὴ ζʹ.

Ode vii.

The impious tyrant's preposterous decree disturbed the populace, * breathing threats and blasphemous pronouncements hateful to God. * Yet the three Youths did not become frightened by the bestial anger or the roaring fire. * But with the dew-emitting wind whistling in opposition to the fire they sang: * O supremely praised You are blessed, O our God and the God of our fathers. [SD]

ᾨδὴ ηʹ.

Ode viii.

We praise and we bless and we worship the Lord.

You in equal number * to the Trinity, pious Youths, bless God the Father Maker of all, * and also praise the Word who condescended * and who changed the fire in the furnace into dew; * the all-holy Spirit who gives life to all creation, * also exalt supremely to the ages. [SD]

Luke. 24:12 – 35

At that time, Peter rose and ran to the tomb; stooping and looking in, he saw the linen cloths by themselves; and he went home wondering at what had happened. And behold, two of them were going to a village named Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem, and talking with each other about all these things that had happened. While they were talking and discussing together, Jesus himself drew near and went with them. But their eyes were kept from recognizing him. And he said to them, “What is this conversation which you are holding with each other as you walk, looking sad?” Then one of them, named Cleopas, answered him, “Are you the only visitor to Jerusalem who does not know the things that have happened there in these days?” And he said to them, “What things?” And they said to him, “Concerning Jesus of Nazareth, who was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people, and how our chief priests and rulers delivered him up to be condemned to death, and crucified him. But we had hoped that he was the one to redeem Israel. Yes, and besides all this, it is now the third day since this happened. Moreover, some women of our company amazed us. They were at the tomb early in the morning and did not find his body; and they came back saying that they had even seen a vision of angels, who said that he was alive. Some of those who were with us went to the tomb, and found it just as the women had said; but him they did not see.” And he said to them, “O foolish men, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken! Was it not necessary that the Christ should suffer these things and enter into his glory?” And beginning with Moses and all the prophets, he interpreted to them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself. So they drew near to the village to which they were going. He appeared to be going further, but they constrained him, saying, “Stay with us, for it is toward evening and the day is now far spent.” So he went in to stay with them. When he was at table with them, he took the bread and blessed, and broke it, and gave it to them. And their eyes were opened and they recognized him; and he vanished out of their sight. They said to each other, “Did not our hearts burn within us while he talked to us on the road, while he opened to us the scriptures?” And they rose that same hour and returned to Jerusalem; and they found the eleven gathered together and those who were with them, who said, “The Lord has risen indeed, and has appeared to Simon!” Then they told what had happened on the road, and how he was known to them in the breaking of the bread. Psalm 50 (51).

Mode 2. (or the Mode of the week)

Have mercy on me, O God, according to Your great mercy; and according to the abundance of Your compassion, blot out my transgression.

Wash me thoroughly from my lawlessness and cleanse me from my sin.

For I know my lawlessness, and my sin is always before me.

Against You only have I sinned and done evil in Your sight; that You may be justified in Your words, and overcome when You are judged.

For behold, I was conceived in transgressions, and in sins my mother bore me.

Behold, You love truth; You showed me the unknown and secret things of Your wisdom.

You shall sprinkle me with hyssop, and I will be cleansed; You shall wash me, and I will be made whiter than snow.

You shall make me hear joy and gladness; my bones that were humbled shall greatly rejoice.

Turn Your face from my sins, and blot out all my transgressions.

Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me.

Do not cast me away from Your presence, and do not take Your Holy Spirit from me.

Restore to me the joy of Your salvation, and uphold me with Your guiding Spirit.

I will teach transgressors Your ways, and the ungodly shall turn back to You.

Deliver me from bloodguiltiness, O God, the God of my salvation, and my tongue shall greatly rejoice in Your righteousness.

O Lord, You shall open my lips, and my mouth will declare Your praise.

For if You desired sacrifice, I would give it; You will not be pleased with whole burnt offerings.

A sacrifice to God is a broken spirit, a broken and humbled heart God will not despise.

Do good, O Lord, in Your good pleasure to Zion, and let the walls of Jerusalem be built.

Then You will be pleased with a sacrifice of righteousness, with offerings and whole burnt offerings.

Then shall they offer young bulls on Your altar. And have mercy on me, O God. [SAAS]

What shall we give to the Lord in return for all that He has rendered to us? For us did God come among men. For our corrupted nature did the Logos become flesh and dwell among us. The Benefactor came to the ungrateful; the Liberator to the captives; the Sun of Righteousness to those who sit in darkness. He who is dispassionate suffered on the cross; the Light shone in Hell. He who is Life has trampled on death. For the fallen He is the resurrection. Let us cry out to Him, Glory to You our God. [SD]

O how wise are Your judgments, O Christ! How was it that to Peter You granted to understand Your resurrection by the grave clothes alone, whereas to Luke and Cleopas You spoke as You walked with them, and in speaking did not immediately reveal yourself? And for this reason You were upbraided as the only visitor to Jerusalem who was unaware of what had happened there in those days. Then You, who arrange everything for the benefit of Your creature, interpreted the prophecies concerning You, and when You blessed the bread they recognized You. Even before this, their hearts were burning in recognition of You. Then to the Disciples, who were gathered together, at once they clearly proclaimed Your resurrection; by which have mercy on us.

Blessed are You, O Lord, the God of our fathers, and praised and glorified is Your name to the ages. Amen.

Let Your mercy be on us, O Lord, as we have set our hope on You.

Blessed are You, O Lord. Teach me Your statutes.

Blessed are You, O Lord. Teach me Your statutes.

Blessed are You, O Lord. Teach me Your statutes.

Lord, You have been our refuge from generation to generation. I said: Lord, have mercy on me. Heal my soul, for I have sinned against You.

Lord, I have fled to You. Teach me to do Your will, for You are my God.

For with You is the fountain of life; in Your light we shall see light.

Continue Your mercy to those who know You.

Holy God, Holy Mighty, Holy Immortal, have mercy on us. (3)

Glory to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit.

Both now and ever and to the ages of ages. Amen.

Holy Immortal, have mercy on us.

Holy God, Holy Mighty, Holy Immortal, have mercy on us.

After the Doxology, sing the following Resurrectional Troparion.

Mode 4. (or the Mode of the week)

Today has salvation come to pass in the world. Let us sing to Him who resurrected from the tomb and is the Author of our life. For, destroying death by death, He gave us the victory and the great mercy. [SD]
