God is the Lord, and He revealed Himself to us. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. [SAAS]

Στίχ. αʹ. Ἐξομολογεῖσθε τῷ Κυρίῳ καὶ ἐπικαλεῖσθε τὸ ὄνομα τὸ ἅγιον αὐτοῦ.

Verse 1: Give thanks to the Lord and call upon His holy name.

Στίχ. βʹ. Πάντα τὰ ἔθνη ἐκύκλωσάν με, καὶ τῷ ὀνόματι Κυρίου ἠμυνάμην αὐτούς.

Verse 2: All the nations surrounded me, but in the name of the Lord I defended myself against them.

You came down from on high, O Compassionate, you accepted burial for three days, that you might free us from the passions. Our Life and Resurrection, Lord, glory to you. [Lash]

Χαίρει ἔχουσα, σὲ παραστάτην, ἡ πολύφημος νῆσος Εὐβοίας, καὶ τοῦ ὁσίου Δαυΐδ ἐπαγάλλεται, ἡ θεία Μάνδρα τὸν τάφον σου ἔχουσα, θεοχαρίτωτε πάτερ Ἰάκωβε, σὺ γὰρ χάριτας, βλυστάνεις ἡμῖν ἑκάστοτε, ὡς ῥεῦμα Παρακλήτου ἀνεπίσχετον.

The Isle of Evia today rejoices, * for it has you as its new protector. * And the holy monastery of St. David is glad, * for it possesses your tomb, O Iakovos, * our holy father. And filled with grace of God, * like a channel of the Spirit that is unstoppable, * you pour out gifts of grace every day for us. [SD]

Mode 4.

Σήμερον τῆς εὐδοκίας Θεοῦ τὸ προοίμιον, καὶ τῆς τῶν ἀνθρώπων σωτηρίας ἡ προκήρυξις. Ἐν Ναῷ τοῦ Θεοῦ τρανῶς ἡ Παρθένος δείκνυται, καὶ τὸν Χριστὸν τοῖς πᾶσι προκαταγγέλλεται. Αὐτῇ καὶ ἡμεῖς μεγαλοφώνως βοήσωμεν· Χαῖρε τῆς οἰκονομίας τοῦ Κτίστου ἡ ἐκπλήρωσις.

Today is the foreshadowing of the good-pleasure of God, and the proclaiming of the salvation of mankind. In the Temple of God the Virgin is revealed, and be-forehand she announces Christ to all. To her let us also cry aloud with mighty voice: Hail, the fulfilment of the Creator’s dispensation! [Lash]

Ἀναγινώσκεται τὸ οἰκεῖον Κάθισμα τοῦ Ψαλτηρίου, ἤτοι Κάθισμα 2. Μεθʼ ὃ ἡ μικρὰ Συναπτή.

The appointed Kathisma of the Psalter may be read, i.e. Kathisma 2. Then the short litany.

Commemorating our all-holy, pure, most blessed and glorious Lady, Mother of God and Ever-Virgin Mary, with all the Saints, let us entrust ourselves and one another and our whole life to Christ our God.

Ἀνέστης ἐκ νεκρών, ἡ ζωὴ τῶν ἁπάντων, καὶ Ἄγγελος φωτός, ταῖς γυναιξὶν ἐβόα· Παύσασθε τῶν δακρύων, τοῖς Ἀποστόλοις εὐαγγελίσασθε· κράξατε ἀνυμνοῦσαι· Ὅτι ἀνέστη Χριστὸς ὁ Κύριος, ὁ εὐδοκήσας σῶσαι ὡς Θεός, τὸ γένος τῶν ἀνθρώπων.

You rose from the dead, the Life of all, and an Angel of light cried out to the women: Cease your tears. Give the good tidings to the Apostles Cry aloud in hymns that Christ the Lord has risen, who as God was well-pleased to save the human race. [Lash]

When you had truly risen from the tomb you ordered the holy women to proclaim the Resurrection to the Apostles, as it is written; and Peter, coming at full speed, stood by the grave and seeing the light in the tomb was struck with amazement. And so he both saw the grave clothes lying there alone, without the divine body, and he believed and cried out: Glory to you Christ God, because you save us all, our Saviour, for you are the brightness of the Father. The feeder of our Life, now an infant in body, * the offspring of the just Joachim and Anna, * is offered to God today in the holy Sanctuary. * She was blessed therein by the priest Zacharias. * Therefore let us all, with faith, proclaim she is blessed,* for she is the Mother of the Lord. [SD]

Mortals sealed your grave, O Saviour; an Angel rolled the stone from the door; Women saw you risen from the dead, and it was they who gave the good tidings to your Disciples in Sion: The life of all has risen and the bonds of death are loosed. Lord, glory to you. [Lash]

Consecrated unto God * were you before you were conceived; * being born on earth, to Him * you now are offered as a gift, * O pure one, filling the promise made by your parents. * In purity returned unto the Temple divine * from infancy with lamps brightly shining, in truth * you were a temple divine and a vessel * of the divine unapproachable Light. * How truly great is your sacred entrance, * O only ever-virgin Bride of God. Εὐλογητὸς εἶ, Κύριε, δίδαξόν με τὰ δικαιώματά σου.

Blessed are You, O Lord, teach me Your statutes.

Τῶν Ἀγγέλων ὁ δῆμος, κατεπλάγη ὁρῶν σε, ἐν νεκροῖς λογισθέντα, τοῦ θανάτου δὲ Σωτήρ, τὴν ἰσχὺν καθελόντα, καὶ σὺν ἑαυτῷ τὸν Ἀδὰμ ἐγείραντα, καὶ ἐξ ᾍδου πάντας ἐλευθερώσαντα.

When the hosts of the Angels saw how You were accounted among the dead, they all marveled. You, O Savior, are the One who destroyed the might of death; and when You arose You raised Adam with yourself and from Hades liberated everyone. [SD]

Τί τὰ μύρα, συμπαθῶς τοῖς δάκρυσιν, ὦ Μαθήτριαι κιρνᾶτε; ὁ ἀστράπτων ἐν τῷ τάφῳ Ἄγγελος, προσεφθέγγετο ταῖς Μυροφόροις· Ἴδετε ὑμεῖς τὸν τάφον καὶ ᾔσθητε· ὁ Σωτὴρ γὰρ ἐξανέστη τοῦ μνήματος.

“Why do you mingle the ointments with your tears full of pity, O women disciples?” Thus the Angel who was shining in the tomb cried to the myrrh-bearing women. “See for yourselves the empty tomb and understand, that the Savior has risen from the sepulcher.”

Blessed are You, O Lord, teach me Your statutes.

Λίαν πρωΐ, Μυροφόροι ἔδραμον, πρὸς τὸ μνῆμά σου θρηνολογοῦσαι· ἀλλʼ ἐπέστη, πρὸς αὐτὰς ὁ Ἄγγελος, καὶ εἶπε· θρήνου ὁ καιρὸς πέπαυται, μὴ κλαίετε, τὴν Ἀνάστασιν δέ, Ἀποστόλοις εἴπατε.

Very early in the morning, the myrrh-bearing women were hastening to Your tomb lamenting. But the Angel appeared to them and uttered, “The time for lamentation has ended; weep no more. Go announce the Resurrection to the Apostles.”

Εὐλογητὸς εἶ, Κύριε, δίδαξόν με τὰ δικαιώματά σου.

Blessed are You, O Lord, teach me Your statutes.

Μυροφόροι γυναῖκες, μετὰ μύρων ἐλθοῦσαι, πρὸς τὸ μνῆμά σου, Σῶτερ ἐνηχοῦντο. Ἀγγέλου τρανῶς, πρὸς αὐτὰς φθεγγομένου· Τί μετὰ νεκρῶν, τὸν ζώντα λογίζεσθε; ὡς Θεὸς γάρ, ἐξανέστη τοῦ μνήματος.

When the myrrh-bearing women had come with their spices to Your sepulcher, O Savior, they heard the voice of an Angel clearly speaking to them, “Why do you account among the dead the One who lives? For as God, He has risen from the sepulcher.”

Glory.

Προσκυνοῦμεν Πατέρα, καὶ τὸν τούτου Υἱόν τε, καὶ τὸ Ἅγιον Πνεῦμα, τὴν Ἁγίαν Τριάδα, ἐν μιᾷ τῇ οὐσίᾳ, σὺν τοῖς Σεραφείμ, κράζοντες τό· Ἅγιος, Ἅγιος, Ἅγιος εἶ, Κύριε.

We bow down in worship to the Father and His Son and the Holy Spirit, the Holy Trinity, one in essence; and we cry aloud with the Seraphim: Holy, Holy, Holy are You, O Lord.

Καὶ νῦν.

Ζωοδότην τεκοῦσα, ἐλυτρώσω Παρθένε, τὸν Ἀδὰμ ἁμαρτίας, χαρμονὴν δὲ τῇ Εὔᾳ, ἀντὶ λύπης παρέσχες, ῥεύσαντα ζωῆς, ἴθυνε πρὸς ταύτην δέ, ὁ ἐκ σοῦ σαρκωθείς Θεὸς καὶ ἄνθρωπος.

Giving birth to the Giver of life, O Virgin, you delivered Adam from sin, and to Eve you have rendered joy in place of sorrow. He who from you became incarnate, God and man, has directed to life him who fell from it.

When Jesus rose early on the first day of the week, he appeared first to Mary Magdalene, from whom he had cast out seven demons. She went out and told those who had been with him, as they mourned and wept. But when they heard that he was alive and had been seen by her, they would not believe it. After this he appeared in another form to two of them, as they were walking into the country. And they went back and told the rest, but they did not believe them. Afterward he appeared to the eleven themselves as they sat at table; and he upbraided them for their unbelief and hardness of heart, because they had not believed those who saw him after he had risen. And he said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to the whole creation. He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned. O Lord, You shall open my lips, and my mouth will declare Your praise.

For if You desired sacrifice, I would give it; You will not be pleased with whole burnt offerings.

Θυσία τῷ Θεῷ πνεῦμα συντετριμμένον· καρδίαν συντετριμμένην καὶ τεταπεινωμένην ὁ Θεὸς οὐκ ἐξουδενώσει.

A sacrifice to God is a broken spirit, a broken and humbled heart God will not despise.

Ἀγάθυνον, Κύριε, ἐν τῇ εὐδοκίᾳ σου τὴν Σιὼν καὶ οἰκοδομηθήτω τὰ τείχη Ἰερουσαλήμ.

Do good, O Lord, in Your good pleasure to Zion, and let the walls of Jerusalem be built.

Hearken, O Damsel, let Gabriel say. * Incline your ear, O Virgin pure, * and hear the counsel of the Most High, ancient and true; * and make ready for your own reception of God. * For through you the Uncontainable associates with mortal men. * And I am therefore rejoicing and shouting: * O all you works of the Lord, * praise and bless the Lord. Ἄχραντον ναὸν ἐν οἴκῳ Θεοῦ, προσάγουσα Ἄννα ποτέ, Βοῶσα ἔφη, ἐν πίστει τῷ Ἱερεῖ, Γονὴν τὴν ὑπὸ Θεοῦ, δοθεῖσαν κἀμοί, Δεδεγμένος νῦν εἰσάγαγε, ἐν τῷ ναῷ τοῦ Κτίστου σου, καὶ χαίρων ψάλλε αὐτῷ· Εὐλογεῖτε, πάντα τὰ ἔργα Κυρίου τὸν Κύριον.

Anna cries out on this day as she leads * the all-pure Temple to the house * of God, and she says most faithfully to the priest: * “This child giv’n to me by God receive from me, * lead her now into the Temple of the Maker of all things and sing * to him with joy and cry out with a loud voice: * O all you works of the Lord, bless the Lord your God!” [RB]

Ἔφησεν ἰδὼν τῇ Ἄννῃ ποτέ, ἐν πνεύματι ὁ Ζαχαρίας· Ζωῆς Μητέρα, εἰσάγεις ἀληθινήν. Ἥν περ τηλαυγῶς οἱ Προφῆται Θεοῦ, Θεοτόκον προεκήρυξαν, καὶ πῶς Ναός χωρήσει αὐτήν; διὸ θαυμάζων βοῶ· Εὐλογεῖτε, πάντα τὰ ἔργα Κυρίου τὸν Κύριον.

When he saw Anna with Spirit well-filled, * priest Zachariah said to her: * “You bring to us the true Mother of Life, the one * whom prophets of God have called the Mother of God. * And how shall the Temple hold her in its walls? I am now stricken with awe. I sing with wonder and shout with a loud voice: * O all you works of the Lord, bless the Lord your God!” [RB]

Anna replied to him with a clear voice: * “I stand, beseeching the true God; * I call on him with my faith and my fervent pray’r * to take now the fruit of my travail joyfully. * I vowed after birth I would give her to him who gave her to me. * So therefore, joyfully leaping, I cry out: * O all you works of the Lord, bless the Lord your God!” [RB]

Saint of God, intercede for us.

Ἡ παλάμη σου τοῦ αἵματος Κυρίου, ὅτε πάτερ σεμνῶς ἐτέλεις τὴν θυσίαν, τοῦ Ἰησοῦ ὡς ἄγγελος οὐράνιος, ἤγγιξε καὶ ὤφθης, ἀπαστράπτων ξένως, ταῖς θείαις ἐνεργείαις.

When you solemnly once were celebrating * the divine liturgy, like a heavenly Angel, * your hand, O father, came in contact with the blood * of Jesus the Savior, * whereupon you shone forth with uncreated glory. [SD]

Ἅγιε τοῦ Θεοῦ, πρέσβευε ὑπὲρ ἡμῶν.

Saint of God, intercede for us.

Σαῖς πρεσβείαις τὴν ποίμνην σου θεόφρον, ἐκ παντοίων δεινῶν καὶ πονηρῶν δαιμόνων, διηνεκῶς προφύλαττε Ἰάκωβε, ἵνα ἀνυμνῶμεν, καὶ δοξολογῶμεν, Χριστὸν εἰς τοὺς αἰῶνας.

Godly-minded Iakovos, we pray you * to unceasingly guard your flock from evil demons * and from disasters by your mighty prayers for us, * so that we may sing praise * and glorification to Christ unto the ages. [SD]

Ὁλοθύμως Ἰάκωβε μὴ παύσῃ, πρὸς Χριστὸν τὸν Θεὸν ἐκτείνων τὰς σὰς χεῖρας, ὑπὲρ ἡμῶν πάθεσιν Ἰάκωβε, κατατρυχομένων, καθʼ ἑκάστην πάτερ, ἀκέστορ ἀσθενούντων.

Never cease lifting up your pure and holy * hands in wholehearted prayer on our behalf to Christ God, * father Iakovos, for we are buffeted * daily by passions; * so we turn to you, holy healer of the injured. [SD]

Νυσταγμὸν ἀκηδίας τὸν ἐντός μου, ἀπομάκρυνον νῦν Μαρία ταῖς λιταῖς σου, καὶ τῆς ψυχῆς τὸν τόνον Θεονύμφευτε, ἔγειρον λιταῖς σου, ἵνα ἐγκαρδίως, δοξάζω τὸν σὸν τόκον.

Now the spiritual apathy within me * makes me drowsy all day. O Mary, by your prayers * take it away and rouse attention in my soul, * so that I may send up glory to your Son with a wakeful heart, O Virgin. [SD]

We praise and we bless and we worship the Lord.

Θαύματος ὑπερφυοῦς ἡ δροσοβόλος, ἐξεικόνισε κάμινος τύπον· οὐ γὰρ οὓς ἐδέξατο φλέγει νέους, ὡς οὐδὲ πῦρ τῆς Θεότητος, Παρθένου ἢν ὑπέδυ νηδύν· διὸ ἀνυμνοῦντες ἀναμέλψωμεν· Εὐλογείτω ἡ κτίσις πᾶσα τὸν Κύριον, καὶ ὑπερυψούτω, εἰς πάντας τοὺς αἰῶνας.

Babylon's bedewing furnace bore the image * of an extraordinary wonder. * For it did not burn the youths it accepted, * nor did the fire of Divinity consume the Virgin's womb wherein it went. * So let us melodiously chant in praise: * Let all creation bless and extol the Lord, * and let it exalt Him supremely to the ages. Ἐξέστη ἐπὶ τούτῳ ὁ οὐρανός, καὶ τῆς γῆς κατεπλάγη τὰ πέρατα, ὅτι Θεός, ὤφθη τοῖς ἀνθρώποις σωματικῶς, καὶ ἡ γαστήρ σου γέγονεν, εὐρυχωροτέρα τῶν οὐρανῶν· διό σε Θεοτόκε, Ἀγγέλων καὶ ἀνθρώπων, ταξιαρχίαι μεγαλύνουσι.

Heaven was amazed at this and the ends of the earth astounded: that God had appeared to mankind in bodily form, and that your womb had become far wider than the heavens. And so, Mother of God, the ranks of Angels and of humans magnify you. [Lash]

Ὠράθης ὦ Παρθένε Μήτηρ Θεοῦ, ὑπὲρ φύσιν τεκοῦσα ἐν σώματι, τὸν ἀγαθόν, Λόγον ἐκ καρδίας τῆς ἑαυτοῦ, ὃν ὁ Πατὴρ ἠρεύξατο, πάντων πρὸ αἰώνων ὡς ἀγαθός· ὃν νῦν καὶ τῶν σωμάτων, ἐπέκεινα νοοῦμεν, εἰ καὶ τὸ σῶμα περιβέβληται.

You appeared as Mother of God, O Virgin, when beyond nature you gave birth in the body to the good Word, whom the Father uttered from his own heart before all ages, as he is Good. Him we now understand to be beyond bodies, even though he is clothed in a body. [Lash]

Ἄγγελοι τὴν Εἴσοδον τῆς Παρθένου, ὁρῶντες ἐξεπλήττοντο, πῶς μετὰ δόξης εἰσῆλθεν, εἰς τὰ Ἅγια τῶν Ἁγίων.

When they saw the Entry of the Virgin Maiden, the Angels were astonished, at how she entered with glory into the Holy of Holies.

Ὡς ἐμψύχῳ Θεοῦ κιβωτῷ, ψαυέτω μηδαμῶς χεὶρ ἀμυήτων, χείλη δὲ πιστῶν τῇ Θεοτόκῳ ἀσιγήτως, φωνὴν τοῦ Ἀγγέλου ἀναμέλποντα, ἐν ἀγαλλιάσει βοάτω· Ὄντως ἀνωτέρα πάντων ὑπάρχεις, Παρθένε Ἁγνή.

Now let no uninitiated hand * approach the living Ark of God to touch it. * Rather let believers’ lips sing out in exultation * the Angel’s salutation unceasingly * to the Theotokos and cry out: * You, O pure and virgin Maiden, are truly superior to all. [SD]

Soaring higher than the power of speech * is your miracle, O pure Theotokos. * For beyond all reason I perceive in you a body * that in no way admitted the flow of sin. * Therefore with thanksgiving I cry out: * You, O pure and virgin Maiden, are truly superior to all. [SD]

Ἄγγελοι καὶ ἄνθρωποι τῆς Παρθένου, τὴν Εἴσοδον τιμήσωμεν, ὅτι ἐν δόξῃ εἰσῆλθεν, εἰς τὰ Ἅγια τῶν Ἁγίων.

Angels and people, let us all honor the Entry of the virgin Maid, how she entered in glory into the Holy of Holies.

Paradoxally the Law prefigured you, * O pure one, as a jar and tabernacle, * spiritual ark and rod of Aaron and the curtain, * indestructible Temple and the gate of God. * Thus it teaches us all to cry out: * You, O pure and virgin Maiden, are truly superior to all. [SD]

You bound yourself to Jesus as to a sail. * By your faith, holy father, you mightily humbled the force * of the stormy winds of the evil one. * You made it to the heavenly * harbor and the mansions of all the saints, * and there you joined the chorus * of angels and devout saints, * for in your life you imitated them. [SD]

The godly life you led as a pious monk * in your patron saint David’s great monastery, where you lived, * was a good example of Christian life, * O wondrous St. Iakovos. * Therefore to salvation you were a guide * for those who came to see you, * their spiritual father, * and they corrected and improved their lives.
